Advice on making bunting please!

I want to try my hand at making a small piece of bunting, about 1-2 meters. I am not a seamstress although I can do the basics.

Any links or advice please? Also recommendations for cheapish fabric suppliers please?

Well, you could do the pinking shears kind where you cut the fabric with pinking shears and then you don't have to sew it.

Or cut out a triangle from card and either sew two together or not if you don't want to.

I used wide ribbon for my 'string'. You could glue gun it on or sew it.

I think I would prefer to sew rather than used pinking shears and use either ribbon or binding. I'd like it to be more hard wearing as it's for the home. (The distract from the ugliness of our piano! ]

Yes, mine is indoor bunting too. It only took a couple of hours. I used old shirts, pjs and some dresses my dds have grown out of as well as some fabric I had.

You won't need much fabric for 1-2 meters of bunting, half a mtr or less of fabric will do it

I made a template out of cardboard, and cut out all the triangles, sewed them right sides together and turned through, give them a quick iron once they're turned the right way. I used a wide ribbon for the top, ironed it in half, and sewed each flag into the crease, that way you get a really nice net edge on both sides :) You could use binding in the same way for the top

Ooo, thank you. Will have a look around for suitable fabrics. I have some old curtains I could use but would really like a mish mash of toning colours and patterns!

Dingle, here are a couple of tutorials that I wrote a couple of years ago... for basic bunting and another for mini bunting. Hope you find them helpful.

Just remember all you are doing is sewing in straight lines... and if I can do it, you certainly can!

Aberkhans is really good for fabric. You can order online as well of you're not nearby to a store.

I made some out of an old curtain (quite a heavy cotton). I was after quantity, not quality (there's about 30m of it!), so just cut the triangles and sewed round the edges with a zigzag stitch to stop them fraying. Then machines them onto a long bit of fabric tape. It's been used loads (and left out in the rain last summer for a few weeks) and isn't fraying or anything, I'm really pleased with it...

Now I am looking at pwetty bias binding!

Wow so lovely. TI want to make DS a lovely hungry caterpillar set with his name to hang over his bed. Thanks for the inspiration Dingle! I bought myself a sewing machine today but have too much work to do to open it for a few weeks! so an procrastinating imagining all the fun i'm going to have over the summer

That sound great daveydavidson. My original inspiration was Christmas themed, so IF it all goes to plan I am going to make another seasonal one!

It's taken a long time, my little triangles have been moved around from room to room, all in various stages of readiness! BUT at last I have made up a small length which is now proudly hanging on my piano!

Tempted to try to re-upholster the old piano stool next! Thank you for the advice and inspiration! xx
