I'd like to make a poster for DS with certain words on it...

...but I'd love some advise or inspiration please.
DS has lost what little confidence he did have and is having a hard time of it at school and I'd like to do a framed poster to go on his bedroom wall with his name in the middle and then surrounded by words that are all positive like 'first class, brilliant, excellent, fantastic, amazing" etc. I'm thinking different colours, sizes and typefaces but I'm finding it really hard to start Sad

Any tips gratefully received.
TIA

Not sure how to link as am on my phone- but www.notonthehighstreet.com have some good ideas under 'prints' - personalised prints which sound similar to what your describing and might be good for inspiration? What a lovely idea for your son.

thanks teaparties. Off to look now

You could make a wordle for him.

Write a paragraph about him, using his name a lot. Then put it into wordle. His name will come out biggest, with all the nice things you said about him round it.

I'm not sure if this is what you're after, but if you were planning to make it yourself, how about doing it like a crossword? So the words you mentioned would contain, start or finish with letters present in his name. You could even just make it a crossword for him to complete if you wanted. Throw in some of his hobbies, interests, favourite fictional characters etc.

Love the wordle

mckenzie · 16/03/2013 22:26

Thanks guys for these ideas. Unfortunately I'm on a Mac and it won't let me open Wordle so I'll have to wait for Dh to come and sort that. I think I've actually seen DS use wordle for some homework so perhaps I could do it on his laptop (if i could find it!)
I like the idea of the cross word - that might take a bit more time and planning though but the Wrodle idea if how I pictured it so i shall try that first.
Thanks again.
Oh, and any good words you can think of to use?

I've got the old favourites...

What about an alphabet, with a word for each letter (cheating when you get to X-cellent)?

Adorable
Brave
Clever
etc

YoullNeedATray · 17/03/2013 16:53

Top tip for Wordling... if you have separate words that need to stay together (eg great cook from OrderInformation's suggestions), then you type it into the Wordle list with a 'tilde' instead of the space. That's the wavy line like this ~ that's usually on the same key as #.
So great cook is entered as great~cook.

How would you make a wordle into a poster? Would you have to save it then send to specialist printing company and how would you find one?

YoullNeedATray · 17/03/2013 22:48

If you 'Alt Print Screen' you can paste the image into almost any other bit of software, then crop the edges off and print., Do you know anyone with access to an A3 colour printer at work perhaps?

I have a Wordle door sign for my classroom - all of my pupils' names, then my name and year group bigger, then the class name biggest of all. Printed and laminated it looks fab :-) That's how I learned the trick with the tilde, for the Ellie~A, Ellie~B, Ellie~C, Mrs~EcoLady, etc!

mckenzie · 17/03/2013 23:24

thank you so much - all really helpful tips re the printing and the two word idea. I've run of a few tonight and I'm really getting excited about Wordle! How sad does that make me?
I like the alphabet idea too SDGT but i don't think i'm patient enough in this instance. With the Wordle it can be done, printed and all his wall by tomorrow afternoon Smile

anyone use Wordle on a MAC? I can't work out how to copy just the Wordle to then put it in a different program so that I can tweak it manually.

TIA

please ignore question - I've saved it as a PDF via the print option.

I would play around with type, size and colour and plop each word down seperately and play around. I love the infographics where the most common word/theme is the largest, working down the the least common in the smallest size. You can do this in PowerPoint easily enough. Print it onto photographic paper and frame it - it will look great.

I'd use words that would inspire too: fearless, kind, strive, achieve...

Or maybe look at the Oliver Bonas framed prints 'work hard, play hard, be kind' caught my eye. Bloody simple but lovely.

I was going to suggest something a little more dynamic. Create a poster that leaves a blank space in the middle (A4 size ish). The poster is titled 'thought of the week/month' or something like that. Around the blank space you can add all the wonderful suggestions you've been given here. Then in the blank bit, you add something different every week or every month which can be something you've come up with yourself, or some lovely inspiring thoughts from the internet. This way your DS will be more inclined to look at it frequently and you can customise it to whatever's going on in his life. There are fantastic quotes in Pinterest, most quotes from Dr Seuss are really inspiring.

If you google Word Cloud/ word could generator you get lots of these including a Mac one.

I tend to use Coral draw for stuff like this, DD2 is a wizz with word art onS word. Some where on that you can fill titles with your on picture, very cute.

Also very distracting from your HW.

Startail · 18/03/2013 10:34

On MS Word

mckenzie · 18/03/2013 21:26

earlyinthemonring - I like your thinking. I've decided to do the Wordle for the frame that I have already chosen but I also bought a piece of blackboard type/wipe clean material for his room. I am going to write a thoughtful quote on there and change it regularly - I love the Dr Suess ones.
Startail - thank you but it's not really my cup of tea, being creative etc. I find it too hard to be pleasurable.
Moonin - I like the "work hard, play hard, be kind" quote - I shall definitely be using that.
Thanks again everyone. Much appreciated

It's not too hard if your not hypercritical of your efforts.

Which is why DD2 likes the computer, she gets very stressed by her drawings not being just so.

Hoping your DS likes his words and hope school improves.

mckenzie · 19/03/2013 13:29

Thanks start ail but maybe for another project whe I don't want it 'now'.

I've just got the Wordle back from the printer and framed it and it's looking mighty fine. Can I use a beef tenderiser mallet as a hammer? Smile

mckenzie · 19/03/2013 20:35

DS loves the Wordle Grin. He smiled and chuckled and must have read the words 5 times at least.
He wasn't quite so taken with the "work hard, play hard" quote on the blackboard sticker so I might change that to one of the Dr Suess quotes later while he's asleep. See if he notices!

Thanks again for all your input. I might have to do one for DD now!
