Crotchet question

I've decided to start crocheting as a hobby, I'm trying to do a granny square blanket.

I've picked up how to do it,however once I get back to the 1st corner to join it, the video I watched said to use a slip stich to join it. However when I get on to the next round or two it seems to come loose and unravels.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm getting really frustrated and on the verge of giving up? I really want to learn to do it though, as I'd eventually like to be good enough to do squares for the wooly hugs, as a thank you for the blanket they are making for me.

Are you changing colour for the next round?

If so you need to cut your yarn leaving about a 3 or 4 inch "tail". Pull this through your loop and fasten off. Start the new colour and carry on.

(There is a way of starting the new colour through the last loop of the old one before you fasten off but I don't use it so can't explain it, sorry )

I use the Purl Bee instruction for granny squares. Purl Bee instructions. They are in US terminology so they use DC to mean a UK Treble.

Sorry to sound stupid, so after I've done the slip stitch I need to pull the tail through the loop?

Only if you are changing colour. If you are carrying on in the same colour you just keep going.

I'm sure MN has increased the crochet community. For years I have been the only person I know that can crochet. I'm still the only person I know that can crochet but there are millions of us online IYKNIM and I now know loads of virtual hookers!

If I'm changing colour, I don't pull the tail through, I pull the new colour through the loop, pull the tail of the old colour so that the loop tightens completely and then knot new tail and old tail together. Then I carry on my merry way.
