Best basic sewing machine

Hello everyone

Hope you have all had a wonderful christmas.

I am looking for recommendations for a good basic sewing machine that can handle a range of fabric thickness. I do sew but stick to fairly basic projects and my old machine died mid cushion cover ! Very annoying ! It was a reconditioned Brother that was far to fancy for my needs !

Any ideas ?

I got a mini sewing machine from John Lewis last year which is very simple to use but does struggle with the thicker fabrics.

I did look at those but did wonder if it woould be ok for heavier stuff. Looks great for the price though

Definitely worth paying a visit to John Lewis if you are near one. They do that mini one (£49) I think but also some other inexpensive ones which might meet your needs. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. I know someone who has the next machine up from the mini one and she has been back to her local branch a number of times with queries on how to use the machine and they have always helped. Or go for another reconditioned machine. Mine is a 1950s Singer and I absolutely love it.

Pipme - I used to sell Elna machines and bought 10 for sewing lessons in my shop, they're solid machines and exceptionally reliable. Highly recommended from me.

My understanding (which may not be accurate) is that John Lewis are moving away from brands and focusing on their John Lewis sewing machines so they sadly may not be as reliable as they once were.
