Need help with a pattern (knitting)

Just need to make sure I am doing this pattern correct.

It says knit to sleeve length then slip first 3 stitches and last 3 stitches onto spare yarn. It's the owls pattern on Rav.
Do I just knit the stitches inbetween, as this will create a hole? Is this correct?

I can't see the pattern without buying it but if you read on a bit, does it not say that you need to pick those stitches up again later on? I would assume that if the stitches are on some yarn then they will get picked up again otherwise they would be cast off. Where they get picked up will give you a clue as to what happens and why you won't have a hole.

I would think, looking at the pattern that to keep the yoke flat, you don't want to work the pattern to the very edge of the sleeve because it needs to be joined together underneath in your arm pit iyswim. So yes you would either cast off the other stitches or carry on knitting, depending on what the pattern says.

It is a lovely pattern btw. I have seen it somewhere before and was impressed with it then too.

It will just leave a small hole/slash under the arms to close by stitching or grafting them to the body. You will divide for the back and front in a similar way.

If you're used to knitting flat, there's always a flat bit at the edge of set in sleeves - that's what those slipped stitches are.

If you go on to the Kate Davies group on Rav you will find a thread specifically about owls. It's knit bottom up, so I'm guessing you do the sleeves and body up to the same height (armpit) and then join them all together for the yoke - leaving, as Bertha says, some stitches behind to close up for the armpit. But definitely check on the thread if you're not sure.

Right, just checked. Yep, you leave 6 on the sleeve and 6 on the yoke to close up the gap under the arm. Each stitch on the sleeve will be grafted on to its opposite number on the yoke to make a seamless join between the two pieces.

Or do I slip the remaining Sts (in the middle of the 3st at the beginning and end) rather than knit them?

Not sure I totally understand the question but no, you need to stop knitting these stitches now. So they go on to waste yarn or a stitch holder and you leave them alone.

I don't think you need to break the yarn - you'll be knitting the sleeves and yoke in one piece, presumably starting from where the yarn is now, all the way round in a big circle until you get back to where the yarn is now.

What's confusing though the pattern tells you to slip first 3 onto waste yarn and last 3 but doesn't tell you to slip the stitches in between.

No, that's right - because you're going to carry on knitting those, so you're not slipping them at all.
