Does anyone know where i can buy Rowan Calmer, or a very similar yarn, at less than £6 a ball? I've seen a pattern i like, but the yarn will cost £90 !Shock it's a very soft 2 ply cotton yarn. anyone know something silimar, preferably around £4 a ball (or less)

Place an order including ye catalogue (I got six cones of pure cotton for £20 I think, all of them Leylandii sized) and you may get lucky like I did. The yarn is super - mostly Provence cotton, but a couple of the very pretty Venetian cotton crepe 4 ply in jade and and cream.

tamum · 11/04/2006 15:30

:o at the Leylandii size! It's such good value though. I made a sweater for grown-up stepdd for about £12 from alpaca and mohair from there.

Yes, that's the one bundle- nice patterns in the book for it, even though the one I really want to make involves (gulp) crochet.

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:32

but tell me this: how do you get it into the house (leylandii sized & all that) without dh knowing? (obviously one has to explain away the bank statement as some kind of error..but the physical presence of skeins/cones is a dead giveaway, especially if like me you already have a european wool mountain festering behind the sofa..eek)

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:33

btw tamum, am enjoying happy hooker, even if the instructions are all in American Crochet
am even considering making a welcome mat from twine...

tamum · 11/04/2006 15:36

Oh good! Maybe I will have to succumb to that as well...

In answer to the query to Marina, my ploy is to have a box room into which dh rarely ventures, equipped with sets of drawers which hide a multitude of sins, e.g. the two pure silk cones I bought from Texere without noticing that they were for sewing, not knitting. They are very large and completely useless, but they are at the back of a drawer now, so heigh ho.

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:45

I wait til it is his late night at work and stow it in the back of my wardrobe, but as the cones don't squish like yarn balls I am going to have to get a grip Grin
Am deeply Envy of tamum's lovely solution. Now, if I could persuade ds to sleep in the cupboard under the stairs..."just like Harry Potter, darling"...

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:47

have just booked appt to see property on thursday evening...do you think it's excessive to buy larger home purely for yarn concealment? Wink

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:47

Mine used to be behind the sofa too until dh moved the b*gger to put up the Christmas tree while I was out and nearly got smothered bundy Grin
I told him it was a legal requirement for knitters to have a preposterous stash, a bit like rod licenses for anglers

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:48

oooh, dish on the house. Sorry you got jilted by those evil persons wanting to sell to their own family Shock

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:50

yes, bastards. I wanted those original bannister rails and marble fireplaces. that was holloway ish, this is literally next rd. have gone a bit loopy since i found out this morning from halifax that they will give us a bigger mortgage than we thought (this one is a 4 bed, 2 reception but what sounds like poky kitchen)

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:50

(i meant next rd to where we are now)

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:52

Kitchen, schmitchen. Knock it through. Bedroom each for dds, one for you two, STASH ROOM. With token spavined rollabed in corner of course...

bundle · 11/04/2006 15:54

STASH ROOM swoooonerama

do you count is as Emergency Yarns in case mood takes you for say a speedy pair of socks? or a spontaneous jumper? I say: it's better (and slightly cheaper) than crack.

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:57

I have a holding pattern of eight separate stashes, each parcelled up (in an Ocado bag natch) with the ideal project name laundry-markered on Shock
Am sock-phobic but tend to reach for the hairy scarf pile when in need of a quick fix
Did I really just post that...

Marina · 11/04/2006 15:59

Let's face it, Rowan have a gap in the market here

Rowan Unhinged - has to be gloriously tactile but almost impossible to find a good pattern match, so there it sits...
Rowan Skint - this is a textured, almost gritty yarn, with flecks of shredded returned cheques...

bundle · 11/04/2006 16:05

snigger

have a knitting friend who calls her stash The Box of Shame Blush

tamum · 11/04/2006 16:05

OK, just for you lovely ladeez, here is a very small part of my stash, bearing in mind that this is the stuff that doesn't fit into the drawers Blush...\link{http://www.flickr.com/photos/47808260@N00/?saved=1\stash}. The pale pink stuff is for dolls' faces, I hasten to add. You can also see the ribboned Monsoon-y cardi I made for dd :)

New house, bundle??? How nice. I wonder if a centrally-heated shed might do for stash purposes?

Marina · 11/04/2006 16:06

Mine is more like a Tardis of Shame Blush
Signing off now to decoke windowsills so as not to die of embarassment when Mr Double Glazing pays a call, best of luck with the house hunting bundy

Marina · 11/04/2006 16:09

But I feel a cathartic sense of relief at seeing that portfolio tamum Grin
Are you sure you don't own Texere? Are you or are you not Christine, and did you adopt a lovely Yorkshire accent on 17th March and then sell me wool from your own spare room?
Gorgeous, gorgeous cardy by the way. Deeply awestruck Grin
Am I allowed to say that from that angle the kaalund looks like it might be hairy knicks though

tamum · 11/04/2006 16:11

Damn, my cover is blown :o

You are so right about the Kaalund. It looks more shawl-like now it's finished and blocked you will be relieved to know. Would make for very itchy pants, I think. Thanks for the comment on the cardi- I am chuffed, I have to admit!

bundle · 11/04/2006 16:12

total respect tamum!

the ribbons on the cardi are reminiscent of days spent running fingers along spoils at VV Rouleaux!

tamum · 11/04/2006 16:14

Sadly, I realise that is respect for my stash as opposed to my design skills :o I was wishing I lived near to V V Rouleaux, but luckily I found this online place that sells heavily embroidered ribbons dirt cheap- the really fancy one on there was only about £1.50 for a metre.

tamum · 11/04/2006 16:16

\link{http://www.cheapfabrics.co.uk/thestore/index.php/cPath/98_99\Here, if anyone's interested by the way}

bundle · 11/04/2006 16:18

no, it's deffo respect for all the hard work too Smile

kickassangel · 11/04/2006 22:36

have just booted dh off the 'puter, so can't be long as he's sulking in the lounge! Went to my local friendly shop, where i das the sirdar catalogue, and was sadly disappointed. the sirdar cotton could be substituted, but it felt like cotton, not like mmmmmmm. now don't know hat to do. surely there must be a yarn out there that feels as yummy as rowan? i'm trying to develop my knitting, so don't want to risk £90 on a up! Do you knowledgable ladies know of any good patterns for baggy/comfy jumpers to wear at home & slob in? That was the original idea for this jumper - i'm planning ahead for next winter (i'm not a fast knitter Blush)
