Colours and yarn for striped baby blanket?

Sorry, Norks, you are getting my next 'thing', but I'm in hospital with baby DS and want to make him a blanket.

I've practised the pattern for the really easy 'vintage vertical stripe' blanket (Bella Dia - can't link from phone). It's designed to use up scraps of yarn, but I'm going to buy some.

What colours would look nice in thin stripes? I think bright rather than really pastel. And what sort of yarn for something lovely and soft. I only have access to John Lewis. Links would be good so I can get DH to go in the morning for me on the way to visit.

And the pattern is for a proper sized blanket I think. Foundation chain of 250. How big for a cot blanket? Or do I just measure it as I go along?

Thanks.

Congratulations Grin

You may need an Attic24 pack. Hang on, I'll do you a linky...

Ta da! It's stylecraft special which is lovely and soft but is acrylic so really practical.

But John Lewis don't sell it Sad

But you could phone them now and see if they could get it in the 1st class post tonight.

I made that exact same blanket using Sirdar Baby Bamboo yarn.

It comes in some lovely vibrant shades and I was really pleased with the finished product

Thanks, both of you. I don't think I can get the attic24 pack in time. What colours of baby bamboo did you use, pantry? Can you remember how many balls you needed?

I'm not sure how much I used because I had lots of it left over from another blanket which I just added to.

YOu can see the shades currently available here

I used greens, blues, purples and pinks, at the time I think there were defiately more shades of blue available. I've just looked to see if I took a picture of it before I gave it away but I can't find one.

It really is lovely yarn to use.

I can't knit, but I would love that kind of thing in really bright, vibrant colours - bright orange, cadbury purple, egg yolk yellow, emerald green, swimming pool blue.

I'm excited! My practise dolls one has gone well. What size hook for baby bamboo do you think? X

I used a 3 for my Bella Dia blanket but I have used a 3.5 and a 4 for the same yarn so I'm sure any of those would work

What colours did you go for?

belindarose · 06/12/2012 19:50

Didn't have any baby bamboo (found another shop as the John Lewis I went to was RUBBISH) so I went for sirdar snuggly. I have 3 shades of blue, a purple, green and a cream. Might not use the cream. I'm trying to work out which order to put them in. Or is random just best? An I overthinking my blanket?

We're out of hospital now, thankfully.

I love coloured blankets. I'm bad at randomising things so I'm doing a baby blanket at the moment in repeating stripes of 7 colours. Just play about until you get a sequence you like, I reckon.

aJumpedUpChristmasElf · 06/12/2012 22:25

Glad to hear you are out of hospital.

I usually go for random, I tend to put my colours in a bag and reach in a grab one. Once I have used a colour I put it in another bag until I have used them all, then I start again.

belindarose · 06/12/2012 22:37

It's taking much, much longer to do the first row than I anticipated, so haven't had to worry about colour changes yet. The pattern gets much easier after this!

I quite like your method, jumpedup. Might go for that!

I find if I try and plan the colour sequence I over think it and get bogged down worrying about if it is right or not.
Using the grab and use method I can just get on.
