Decopatch - beginner help needed please

So, have a grand plan to decopatch some plain wooden IKEA craft drawers for DD1 for Christmas. I have various animal print Decopatch papers and want to do one drawer in each design. But how?

Will I need more than one layer of each paper? Should I do it all in one piece or cut into strips and reassemble as I go, as I read online somewhere?

Will PVA glue be OK? What varnish to use? All help very gratefully received.

Hiya - I decopatched some of my wedding table decorations. I can share my limited experience! You just need:

  • appropriate paper
  • a brush
  • special glue
  • varnish for afterwards (this isn't essential but looks much better and protects it)

Visit here for all the bits and bobs: www.thedecopatchplace.co.uk

For the best result I tore the paper into approximately 1 inch squares. It looks much better with slightly raggedy edges (rather than cut). You can just put several pieces of the paper together and tear them all together.

I only used one layer, but overlapped all of the edges, so it looks like more really. the glue and varnish help to make it look thicker.

Hope that helps - good luck! :)

Thanks for the info.

I have the paper - if I want a drawer front to be zebra print it won't look like that if I tear the paper into pieces, right? Do you know if I can cover it in just one unbroken layer without going too bubbly? Or is it better to cut it into strips then match it as I glue it on?

Hiya - I think keeping it in one piece sort of misses the point of decopatch IYSWIM (ie: the patch bit) Maybe you could just do bigger pieces so it's clear what the animals are? Otherwise it'll just look like you've wall-papered it, which is fine if that's the look you're going for. It may be a bit see-through with just one layer too.

I just did it with the Ikea LÄTT.

I used the decopatch glue, but bought normal patterned tissue paper and it is fine. Just one layer as well, and then used the decopatch varnish.
Someone said normal pva glue yellows.

If you are concerned, get some normal tissue paper and do it to something like a small shoe box, so you get the hang of it.
We use an old ice cream tub for pens/pencils and I did that first just to get to grips with it.

Have fun!
