Need to make an Easter bonnet

Dunno if this is the right place but any advice on how to make an easter bonnet for FRIDAY? I was just gonna get a bit of cardboard and wrap it round DD2's head. Then paint it and stick some ribbon and paper flowers on it.
Any advice, I'm sure I'm not the ony mum doing this, TIA.

I has two to help my kids with last week.

Bought a couple of cheapo straw hats from the £1 shop and we painted them in bright colours then decorated them with cut out flowers, eggs etc that the kids made and painted. We made ribbons out of crepe paper and a nest on top of each with some chicks in them.

I found it was easier to start with a base - the hats were sturdy and had elastic under the chins too so stayed on for two hours. We'll be recycling them next year I'm sure!

I did what you did mygirl

I agree if you have a cheapo straw hat to start with it is prob easier but I couldn't find any so wrapped cardboard round their heads, made the tops into crowns and then got them to stick feathers/glitter/little chicks (can get them everywhere) and then decorate.

DD's nursery class did their easter bonnets today. The easiest one I saw was a circle of card around the head with two bunny ears sticking up from it.

But there were also lots of exotic creations that were NOT done by the three-year-old.

My dd had a paper plate painted, with tissue flowers stuck on it. I cut one edge of the plate to the middle and folded it over itself to make more of a hat shape. But she's only got to walk around for a bit with it on. It didn't stay on her head very well!

Ah I might go to the pound shop and see if they sell straw hats and chicks! I would def prefer to use a straw hat esp if it has elastic chin. Failing that the market is on today I'll pop down there

Right it's B-Day (bonnet)!
I got some straw hats, pink nesting and chicks from the pound shop. The straw hats already had a ribbon and 3 flowers on the front so I stuck nesting on and cicks on top of the nesting. the scrunched up crepe paper into flowers and stuck them on. DD's were very happy indeed!
Thanks for your fab ideas and I hope someone else finds this helpful!

How about a blue bunny? I think I saw these in the pound shop too, cheap and can re-use for next year too!

When I needed to make a quick one for ds I used this site and made the bunny:

\link{http://www.bigeyedowl.co.uk/craft-ideas/Easter.htm#easterbonnet\Easter Bonnet}

It was easy to do for even the artistically challenged like me (I ended up using staples cos I didn't even have any glue in the house Blush)

Photo of him in it \link{http://www.fotothing.com/Pewari/photo/88052057dcb46d0c350bf8b11c829d40/start=175\here}

Pg brain! I meant put the bunny on top of the bonnet. Or just bunny ears. Or as I think someone else has said egg themed. Or chick themed, don't know if chicks are girly or not!
If he'll not have anything at all on the bonnet then I have no ideas sorry.

Love it thank you GeorginaA!!! Wants a brown bunny so that will be our activy for Sunday!!! thanks again everyone for your replies.

Have made it today and looks fantastic. Actually made the long piece/nose/cheek bits all as one so wouldn't have to staple/glue etc. Also added a little fishing line as whiskers on the outer part of the cheek bits and it looks really good. Thanks again.

Karenann · 02/04/2006 14:19

Just seen the bunny hat - fantastic. Just wish I'd seen it before I spent yesterday afternoon helping ds glue chicks, egg shells and tissue paper to a hat!!! will be remembering the bunny for next year!

Easter bonnets - £1.25 in The Works right now!!! I've bought one and a whole load of stuff from Poundland to stick on it (like those little yellow chick things and some bunies etc etc) Hope this helps if you want to go for the lazt approach!! Wink

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 03/04/2006 11:04

If you can't get hold of a cheap straw hat you can really easily make something with a (kind of)rim - wrap a piece of carboard round their head into a large tube - but make it as tall as a rim plus crown. then cut strips from the bottom to teh length of the required rim, leaving the crown bit. fold the strips upwards - what you end up with is the carboard round the head effect but a kind of floppy strippy rim. looks much better then just the cardboard round the head. If you have time you can do papier mached on a balloon. let it set, cut in half. draw round it onto cardboard. cut a rim - but cut inside the edge of the hat bit. cut strips from the edge to the drawn edge of where the hat will go and sellotape on.

thanks again.
