I have spent the last two weeks making my Mum a hand made scrap book all about her relationship with my DS. It turned out really well , I did it in shades of pale blue, cream and brown and I knew my mum would love it. I made a beautiful box to go with it all tied up with a wide ribbon lovely tag and funky fibres. i took it over to my aunts where we were all meeting for dinner. mum opened the box and loved the book as I knew she would BUT she left the box lying in the kitchen and my aunt threw it and the tag into the bin! Scrunched up and everything! She thought Mum was finished with the box! i know she didn't do it deliberately and she was mortified when she realised but I found it so hard to not be angry or disappointed. Mum knew though and she said it was obvious I'd spent a lot of time and effort on it and it was beautiful and my aunt just didn't realise. I guess I'm just disappointed that she didn't realise.

its the consumer culture we live in
how horrible for you. and tbh, for your aunt as well.

Pixiefish · 26/03/2006 23:50

and people don't realise how much work goes into them

Oh God so sorry. My brother's like this. He's so intent on tidying everything away the second it appears that he doesn't even look at stuff. It's such a terrible waste and must have been so hurtful for you.

I get this all the time, I spend weeeeeeeks on things and some people well, don't rave about them insanely and I know it's pathetic but.. I want them to rave darnit!! Grin Blush

fastasleep · 26/03/2006 23:54

My DP is like this... I hoard everything, he thinks it's junk and slings it! Even DD's pictures she has beautifully painted for us! Makes me so cross...
Hasten to add tho I do get him back and throw away his copies of what hi fi and all that crap...! Grin For some reason now he asks before he chucks!

I'm over my huff now Grin My Dsis just delivered a beautiful baby girl and I couldn't care less about the box today cos i'm an auntie! I felt terrible last night for me and all the work that had gone into it, for my Mum who had appreciated it and lost it and for my aunt who was just mortified! But the best thing about MN is you can rant and rave and get it all out without upsetting anyone else! But thank you all for the tea and sympathy 'twas much appreciated! (I think when it's my aunt's turn for a gift I'll stick to chocolates and a nice M&S cardie!!

Glad you're feeling better

Just an idea What about
Signing and writing on the back of your card, like I do.

TOOK ME
3HRS 37MINS TO MAKE.

Only joking Wink I don't realy take 3hrs & 37mins to make a card.

Anyway
Congrats on being an AUNTIE, better get scrapbooking for your niece and make sure you teach her from an early age the value of handmade card.Wink

PeachyClair · 28/03/2006 17:50

ooh I know how you feel, and i'm with FA- I want recipients to rave about the things I make! not just say 'oh that's pretty', then say the same generic comment about the Wilkinsons card they open next. GGRRRR

i made a small scrapbook for my sister last christmas, completely from scratch. as she has lived in africa for 3 years, i concentrated on those 3 years, school pics, christmas etc. i used some fab free papers i had from a magazine ( not the crappy usual ones but really nice ones)and she has put it in a drawer here and moved back to london without it. Should i post it to her??

hullabaloo · 29/03/2006 20:57

Yes! All that lovely work shouldn't go to waste!
