I want to make a cake topper

I've decided I want to make a model of my dad for his cake topper 60th birthday. Is FIMO the best thing to use? I want him to be able to keep it. I am not an expert modeller (never done a thing) but i'm willing to have a go and am generally 'crafty'. Please can someone point me in the right direction and tell me what i need to buy/ in what quantities? Thank you kindly :-)

Fimo comes in pre-packaged lumps. I'd get one lump for every colour that you think you'd need. Allows for mistakes.

I'd also get a fine paintbrush for poking about with. Maybe a craft knife for sculpting details.

Varnish if you want a shiny effect. If not don't bother!

I still have some buttons a friend made for me in fimo in 1988! Still in fine shape - have been through wash many times. It's amazing stuff. They are green roses. Very bespoke.

yes you 'bake' the finished model and it's cooked hard.
