How to dye towels?

Ok, this may have been asked before or perhaps it's blatantly obvious but how do I go about dyeing towels? I'm changing the bathroom and have lots of towels which are still perfectly good to use, however they won't go with the new colour scheme. I've heard that you can buy dye products to go in the washing machine but I'm slightly nervous about this. Any hints, tips or where to buy these things would be most welcome. The colour change will be from Beige to Blue.

I dyed my 3 seater settee from dark blue to dark brown - I large cover, 3 seat covers and 5 cushions - cost me £30.

So long as the blue is darker than the beige you can get away with buying the dye only. If it is lighter you will need to buy a product called Dygon to remove the colour first (as I did).

You need to weigh your towels and work out how much dye you will need and buy shed loads of cheap cooking salt (it tells you how much in the instructions - can't actually remember!).

Then, add salt and powder in correct quantities to drum and knock throught the holes. Add towels and set on a boil wash. Stand back and wait for cycle to finish. Wash towels on boil wash. Dry, stand back and admire!

And don't forget to put your washing machine on an empty boil wash cycle afterwards. I managed to dye my white work shirts pale green after dying some throws and not doing this afterward.Smile
