Have a look at \link{http://www.cricut.com/\this} and this\link{http://www.croppinparadise.com/provo-craft-cricut-personal-electronic-cutter-preorder-p-11861.html\OK}

No computer required, they cut alphabets and all sorts of shapes.
Thats the good news
The bad news is
They will retail around £290.00 and there're not in this country until Oct/Nov this year because of the electricity currency
I've emailed Provo and it's true they're not compatible with our electricity current.
I've wrote my christmas list and this is at the top I've ordered mine ready, just incase santa forgets to bring it.Wink

Does it use special paper or was it just ordinary paper put on some sort of backing?

Carolinett · 23/03/2006 11:44

I was told it will take upto 200grms card I not realy sure yet
I just found another site in this country that's advertising it for £225.00 inc vat if you order for Dec 2006 no mention of freebies I bet by the time it comes to get people to buy it there all be competing on the price and it might be cheaper

arfissimo - it sounds like you've wired a plug or two Grin

arfissimo · 24/03/2006 01:07

I'm not even a crafter and I want one! Could make some fab number and days of the week boards for DD's room. .

Hope you find one at a good price soon Carolinett. Have you checked the US ebay?

Radley · 24/03/2006 12:01

I want one and WILL have one Grin

Carolinett · 24/03/2006 14:35

Update on Mission CRICUT
They are now selling in the USA
They are 110 votage wall oulet

I can't get anyone to tell the WATTS, if I could find out the WATTS I would know if one of the transformers arfissimo mentioned would work, thus saving about £150.
Thats the Good News

The Bad News is if I buy it from the US I won't
have a guarantee to fall back. Hum Hum Do I wait

This is the info I've found so\link{http://www.cricut.com/faq.aspx\far}

the more i see it, the more i want it!!

I had my eye on the xyron one before..... hmmm decisions, decisions!!

katzg · 24/03/2006 17:33

does the xyron one need extra cartridges/xyron fonts, it looks like you can cut anything but its a little unclear, does anyone know?

champs · 24/03/2006 18:10

the xyron personal cutter (one that doesn't need computer) uses books

Carolinett · 24/03/2006 18:48

Hi Champs
What put me of the xyron was this below, I read it on an USA site by a person called
alyciasanders she about 6 messages down
have a look at\link{http://scrapbook.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/1363649/\this}

In response to scrappinlife

Everyone made the xyron personal cutting system seem like a much bigger deal than it really is. We got one in our lss the other day and since then I've been having to demo it a lot and it's a very hard product to demo and sell because already (after a week of use) it's problematic. It doesn't alwasy read the chip that's in the book and it doesn't always respond to commands...not to mention the busy work, you HAVE to cut your paper down to 4x4 and the paper doesn't always stick to the cutting pad the way it's supposed to so it's stuck to the blade instead and is just being drug around rather than being cut. Seriously, it's a hassle. Scrapbooking is supposed to be therapeutic and refreshing, the last thing I want to do is be frustrated that my die cutting system ISN'T cutting... QuicKutz is so much nicer....jmho. Have you caught the fever?

hmmmm!! not too promising.

circut is deff in lead!!:)

arfissimo · 25/03/2006 09:58

Now I've got involved I feel obliged to sort out the watts for you. For a saving of £150 it's a must have.

I'm off to investigate. I'll report back.

Carolinett · 25/03/2006 10:02

Your a star arfissimo

arfissimo · 25/03/2006 10:14

OK, I've asked the manufacturer about the power supply. I might get a reply today, if not, it will be Monday.

Carolinett · 25/03/2006 10:31

They may just tell you the power supply is 110 voultage they don't seem to know the WATTS,
Good Luck and thank you for helping

OP posts:
arfissimo · 25/03/2006 10:34

Yes, I suspect you might be right! I'll wait to see what they come back with. I think they'll probably just say 'it can be plugged in to any wall outlet'.

champs · 25/03/2006 15:38

thanks arfissimo!!

UCM · 25/03/2006 15:51

Just asked DH who said you need a transformer which knocks the voltage down from 240 to 110. It doesnt' matter what the wattage is as it's domestic. HTH.

Might have to buy one now.

UCM · 25/03/2006 16:00

\link{http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=19413&criteria=transformer%20step%20down&doy=25m3\here}

Carolinett · 25/03/2006 17:08

Ye you see now that works for 45 watts, what if the cricut is 100 watts or 150 watts, a TV is 240 voultage but look at the watts on that.
Taking an educated guess it's going to be about the same as a printer but what concerns me is there is a power adaptor with it.
So just to be on the safe side we need to know the watts

OP posts:
UCM · 25/03/2006 19:30

According to my Father, who is a genius in electrics:

The watts are equal to the amp(squared)x the resistance of the appliance.

Another way to get the wattage = the voltage pressure drop x the amps

The resistance = the volts (squared/watts)

and the amps = volts/resistance.

and the volts = resistence/amps.

HTH

PeachyClair · 25/03/2006 19:33

Dh looked at it and said'oh yeah I can build a convertor' (electronic genius)

I said can you give me £290?

FCue muttering and p off noises Grin

UCM · 25/03/2006 19:50

In case you are worried I have just spent some time learning that 1 horsepower = 746 watts

My father seems to think that it will work over here with no problems, with the right transformer.

I never wanted to know what horsepower was, but having done physics (for my father) I now know far too much about this.................

UCM · 25/03/2006 19:52

Argghhhhh, I hated electronics/electrics more interested in blokes!!!! (Still I do know what a resistor is......)

UCM · 25/03/2006 19:55

Also my Father seems to think that we can all do these equations by looking at the site. Arrggggh.

Well I for one, am not going to order it yet, even though I am tempted
