Can you reccomend a sewing machine for 10year old please

I'm thinking of getting my dd a machine for her birthday, in the hope that she might be able to sew when shes older (unlike me).

Can anyone reccomend a good machine for a beginner. I quite like the funky coloured machines from john lewis, but I probably should be looking at technical features rather than just the colour!

Also can anyone reccomend a book to help teach her how to sew.

we bought a brother sewing machine for our eight year old last year, very easy to use, comes with a DVD, DS2(11) and DD both use it all time , they have no problems with it, they seem very happy, and haven't complained that there is anything it can't do,

they make a lot of bags, it's been a really good investment, kept them both happy for hours.

lidl do a nice looking one every now & then for £60. It is an adult machine but from what I have read online it is a good machine for the money.

And John Lewis do a small, cheap machine in many colours for £49. But have no idea how good it is

I have also seen on a couple of US blogs, a Hello Kitty kid size machine by Janome which had positive reviews, although I have no idea if you can get it in the UK (I think that JL own brand machines are made by Janome)

I've got the John Lewis £49 machine for doing little bits and pieces. It's ideal for a beginner, especially a child. There's a good range of stitches, in fact I'd use it for everything except hemming as it doesn't have an invisible hem stitch. It's great for little sewing projects but I think it'd struggle with really thick heavy materials like lined curtains or denim.

I can't recommend any particular books but there's a lady on You Tube called The Crafty Gemini that has posted a few good beginner videos. An ideal starter is making an envelope pillow case - you just basically need to be able to sew a few straight lines. Your daughter might find a video with someone showing her what to do easier to follow at first than patterns and instructions in a book.

Dd has just had the John Lewis one as a gift. I'll let you know how she gets on...

I've seen some quite positive reviews of the IKEA machines. They're simple, but small and light and work well.

OK I have ordered the sewing machine. Now can someone please tell me what I need to include in a beginers sewing kit.

Which machine did you get? For sewing kit: nice box, selection of pins, pin cushion, small scissors for snipping thread, large scissors for cutting material, selection of material (off cuts, fat quarters, larger pieces if making patterns), buttons, ricrac, ribbons, etc.

Its the John Lewis coloured one (about £90).

Thanks for the advice on the sewing kit will hit the shops on Wednesday and probably spend a fortune as I'ma sucker for all the little bits and pieces you can buy.
