I recently started this fabulous Knitted advent calendar Frankies advent calendar It's fab and I wondered if anyone else is already making it or fancies giving it a go?

I've just finished the snowflake and I love it!

Would be lovely to see any variations other people have done.

(sorry if my links don't work properly, I'm not used to linking to things and my Flickr page is a brand new experience for me! Does anyone know how I can just show my advent knits??)

Hello hello! Your links are excellent, well done! I will see if anyone from our blanket support thread feels like coming over to join us here.

What yarn are you using to do the advent garland? I have a load of Patons Fab left over from knitting Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson for the Olympic display at my local yarn shop so was going to go for this.

GlaikitFizzog · 11/09/2012 14:16

Fab! I'll have a proper look when I get home!

coldcomfortHeart · 11/09/2012 15:51

Oh that's so sweet.

Doodlekitty · 11/09/2012 15:55

Oooh, I was just thinking that I'd love to get back to knitting. Might have a look at this

scarlet5tyger · 11/09/2012 16:28

I'm just using left over scraps of yarn as most of the pieces don't take up much. Most of the scraps are DK though so I've had to adapt some of the patterns slightly or they'd end up massive!

I also used a 4mm circular needle for the mitten as its the only circular needle I have! Had to teach myself magic loop to manage it, but am thrilled I did as it will be the end of sewing up hats for me! (I make lots of hats as this time of year for the shoebox/Christmas child projects and hate sewing them up with a passion)

I'd have a go if it was with 2 straight needles Sad Envy

tribpot · 11/09/2012 17:11

Jazzy - we can probably adapt some of the circular ones (are they all done in the round, scarlet?) so you can do 'em flat but with more sewing up.

It's well worth learning how to do magic loop - but having lived through the recent era of soremummy learning I can categorically state it's easier if someone shows you in person! But it can be done. However, for these little pieces I would imagine nearly all of them could be sewn up without looking too much different.

scarlet5tyger · 11/09/2012 17:44

Yes, so far only the mitten one was done on circular needles. I think my next one (a stocking) says to do it in the round but I'm doing it on 2 straight ones as its really not easy doing little teeny knits in circulars!

For very small objects in the road you can use the two circular method Grin Or not, obviously.

tricot39 · 11/09/2012 23:20

Oh that garland is lovely!!
Why did i have to see that?!

lentilweavinghippy · 12/09/2012 09:52

Ooh, it's gorgeous! Not sure if I like the sound of lots of fiddly round knitting though...

flyoverthegoldenhill · 12/09/2012 10:10

thats lovely. I hate using circular needles I'd rather just alter the pattern. I've got 4 hats to knit first, but I might have a go whilst watching soaps. Thanks

tribpot · 12/09/2012 10:23

I'll try and get started on some of the circular ones soon, to see if I can figure out how they can best be adapted to being knit flat.

flyoverthegoldenhill · 12/09/2012 14:52

I think I found a pattern on ravelry for a little mitten on 2 needles, but I might just do extra of another shape instead. I also want to knit some christmas bunting. Now will someone please hold me to that

JazzyComposition · 12/09/2012 17:35

Hello fly, may I please have a link to that pattern please?

lentilweavinghippy · 12/09/2012 19:02

Xmas bunting - what a fantastic idea!

Somersaults · 12/09/2012 20:38

I'm loving this idea :)

DH will be sooooooo pleased at the need to buy more wool

tribpot · 12/09/2012 20:50

Somersaults - there is always a need to buy more wool. Fact.

flyoverthegoldenhill · 13/09/2012 06:34

Jazzy I'msorry I don't knowhow to do links (might give it a go later though) but if you go on ravelry & look up christmas. I'll also check my ravelry stuff later to see if I've saved it, then I can give you more details.
Tribpot you are right that is a true fact
now could you email my DH and tell him thanks

scarlet5tyger · 16/09/2012 20:31

I've had to slow down on this project already (!) but managed to do the stocking today - I changed it from a circular pattern to 2 needles, and also used 4mm needles as they were what were to hand! Stocking

My improvised pattern was CO 14 st in white. Garter stitch 4 rows. Change to red, st st approx 8 rows, co 4 st at beginning of next 2 rows, st st 4 rows, k2tog at beg of next 2 rows. Graft together or CO and sew up. Might need to be fiddled with to get correct size though!

7 down, 17 to go!
