How to make a cushion - for a beginner

This is my first (and quite possibly last!) thread in this topic!

I would like to make DD a cushion out of some leftover material from her curtains (made by a professional, not me!). I want it to be about 15" square (as I want to use an old cushion we've already got), and haven't got any other ideas really. I'd like a tiny bit more interest in it than just a plain square cushion, but not too difficult as I'm a complete beginner.

The material is a big, bold pattern with a fairly large repeat.

Where do I start? Any ideas or links to patterns? Thanks very much! Smile

You could do a basic envelope cushion - so cutting the fabric 15" x 30", folding and sewing a hem on each of the 15" ends, then folding them in on themselves with the pattern inside (so the hemmed ends meet in the middle of the back of the cushion, overlapping a bit), sewing the two side edges closed. Turn the cover the right way round then pop the cushion through.

If you want to add something to embellish it, you could add her initial in appliqué or something similar? Or some lovely big buttons (if she's old enough to have buttons around)

Is that the kind of thing you had in mind? (and does any of it make sense?) (Apologies if I'm teaching my grandmother... etc)

Thank you flubba! (You really aren't teaching your grandmother, don't worry!). Do you fasten the middle bit of the envelope flap with a popper or something, or just leave it?

If it's tight enough, you shouldn't need to, but you could always add a couple of poppers, or velcro (you can get iron-on velcro) if you think you need to.

Let me know how you get on :)

I made it! Am very proud of myself. Pictures on profile. Note the matching curtains. Am especially pleased I managed to centre it on the red fox part of the pattern. I am thinking of putting 3 big buttons on the envelope side, and hidden poppers under them.

Thanks again for the advice Smile.

Hey well done! It looks great and your daughter looks very pleased too :)

I think the buttons idea sounds perfect.

Well done :)
