How to make cartoony POW! style superhero posters for DSs bedroom.

I'm planning to decorate DS's bedroom (he's 4) and he's desperate for a batman/superhero bedroom. I've been looking at prints/posters/canvas online and anything I've found that I liked has been a bit ££££ (or look a bit too grown up for him iyswim).

I'd quite like to do some POW! BOOM! etc images from the old batman cartoons - I thought I could paint some canvases, but I've never done it before so not sure how easy it is to get a good finish, what paints to use etc.

If anyone has any tips or other ideas on how to create a diy bright colourful superhero theme I'd be very grateful!

Use Acrylics...you can get sets for a few pounds in those cheap bookshop/craft type shops...or big single tubes for about a pound each. That's a good way to go as you won't need many colours...probably just red, yellow and black...

Get cheap canvasses and then practice on paper before doing it onto the canvass in pencil...lightly.

Then paint....acrylic paint should be SLIGHTLY watered down....squeeze some out onto a plate...then dip your brush in water and mix it up....you want a consistency that's like single cream.

Get decent brushes...don't stinge on those as cheap ones are awful Once it's dry, you could use a sharpie or other black marker to outline details.

That's it. No need to varnish.

Other ideas are making some cushions like this

Use iron on fabric paper that you get from fabric shops or habidashery stalls...you iron your fabric onto the paper, then draw your POW or BAM onto the papery side...cut it out...peel away the backing and iron it onto a cushion cover. The sticky paper stuff is a couple of pounds a metre.

Also....what about using old comics to do decoupage like this on his table or other furniture?

Thanks NCForNow, that's really helpful. Any recommendations on brushes?

I get mine from Hobbycraft. Get a couple...one flat one with a straight edge...about a cm in width...that's for painting near the edges. And another wider one for filling in.

You could get a fine one too...so you have a choice....some people prefer a fine one for edges but I like flat ....you try both if you can run to it. There will be lots there...ll good quality...should be priced from about £2 to 20 each...get the ones that are about 2 or 3 quid.

Oh and paint your LIGHT colours in first...then move to the darker ones.

Great, thanks. Off to hobbycraft for me!
