I dabble in jewellery making, just for myself and a few gifts. I run an ebay shop selling crafting items and my main line is jewellery making, so I occassionally help myself to the stock when I feel creative
One of the gifts I made was seen and admired and her friend asked if I could make a necklace to match a pair of earrings for her, which I did.
This has now snowballed! I have been commissioned by the friend for 6 jewellery sets for Christmas, and several people where the 2 ladies work have asked if I can make jewellery for them! Then I was asked to do a craft fair (and 2 more in the offing).
Of course I'm extremely chuffed - I don't think what I make is particulary brilliant, just the same as most jewllery makers, but I guess that as they are all friends of friends etc, they feel they can ask me for specifc colours / designs etc
So apart from being very, very panicky I have one question I can't see to answer - what do I put the finished items in?
I have googled jewellery boxes etc and they all seem so expensive - I'm not charging much as it's just a hobby and I don't intend to make this into a major money earner, and so adding in the box costs lessens my "profit" iyswim. They also seem to want me to buy in bulk, and I don't know how many I'm going to make so I only wanted to buy small quantities of a variety of sizes.
I think I have 3 categories - the lady who has asked me for 6 - I want really pretty boxes for her.
The other people who work with them - I have found some clear topped boxes (these will go on display in the staff room and my friend will collect the money for them, so I want something as simple as possible) - Is this ok?
And then there's the craft fairs - so the item will be on display on the table and I will then package them up when they're purchased.
So what do other jewellery makers do?
Also, if I can be really cheeky, where do you sell your items? i.e. etsy, folksy - and do they selll well? (OMG I think I might have the "bug", goes away muttering "but I don't have the time to do this all the time")
