What is this tool?

I inherited my MIL's workbox and it has various old tools in it. Most I can work out, but one is like an enormous bodkin with a big eye and flattened end which is angled into a sort of 45 degree hook. I am guessing it might be a rug making tool - I'd love to have a go at making rag rugs, and wondered if this sounds like the implement to do it with - any one got any ideas. I can't ind a picture of it on google.

Out of curiousity there is also a crochet hook which is over a foot long (and the end is broken off so it must have been even longer) - what sort of crochet would that be for?

My dad used to make rugs and he used a tool called a Latchet Hook. Sounds like what you are describing.

The long crochet hook sounds like it may be for Tunisian crochet.

Lucky you to have inherited some lovely craft stuff. My mum keeps trying to give me her stash of odd knitting needles and bottle green acrylic. Grin

I don't think it is a latchet hook WoollyBacksWife (there is one of those in there too) maybe I could take a photo of it later on and put that up, it's really a kind of giant needle. I have a vague memory of FIL telling me he had made rag rugs in the past (or maybe his mum had or something). I think they are gorgeous, and would love to try.

I've looked up tunisian crochet, - and I think you are right about that, - never saw MIL doing that (and it looks complicated) but I think some of the things in her workbox she had inherited from her mother/MIL.

There are some great old knitting needles and crochet hooks in MIL's stash, and some lovely buttons too. - Also got a lot of old knitting patterns, and various other bits and bobs, - my SIL gave them all to me whe MIl died as she isn't interested in crafty stuff, - I love them - reminds me of MIL whenever I use them - she always had some knitting or crochet in her hands Smile

Is it a weaving needle? pic here

I'm still using some of my MIL's craft stuff and DD has her knitting and crochet needles.

Yes! JamNan - that's it - the metal one in the picture - thank you, - a mystery solved Smile She used to work in a weaving factory in the Scottish Borders for a while, - I wonder if she got it there - or maybe it's more for domestic use.

Anyway - thanks very much Smile I love all these old things, they feel good in your hands, because you know they've had so much use over the years.
