Repairing Seat of Denim Jeans

I've managed to rip the seat of my jeans whilst mowing the lawn; I must have caught on something.

Anyhow, we're camping this weekend and I've neither the time nor the patience to haul the 3 children with me for a new pair. If I can respectably mend this pair it will do me for the camping.

My question is how? I have some scraps of denim so should I sew a square of this onto the inside and try to overstitch the rip once in place or would you sew on the outside using a blanket stitch to secure??? I suppose I need to secure the rip to prevent further ripping?

back at the beginning of the 1980's I had a pair that I patched and patched and patched over and over again on the backside (I sailed in them and the anti slip paint was responsible for this) and they looked fantastic and were much admired and coveted when I went to college in London. I just used to hem round a patch and then sew it on to the outside of the jeans where the hole or rip was using the standard straight stitch on the machine.

I need to do this a lot as I cycle every day, and it plays havoc with my jeans. It's very easy: all you need to do is to place a matching denim patch (e.g. cut from an old pair of jeans) underneath the rip with the right side facing up, pin it to hold it, and then use the zig-zag stitch on your machine to run up and down the rip until it's secure. You can then trim the remaining material underneath. It's so much quicker and easier than trying to find a nice patch (and much, much cheaper than buying new jeans). There's a useful video here that shows you how to do it:

I've used youtube a few times but didn't even consider it this time. I have some denim so I'm going to give it a go, thanks. And if all else fails, I'll patch on top Grin
