Can anyone help with embroidery?

dd is about to start a new school No problem with name labels, I can sew them Grin.

BUT... for the PE kit 'name must be embroidered on the outside so that it's clearly visible' - how do you reckon I should go about this. 'O' level needlework was a long time ago, and I'm not really sure how to start (already wishing that we'd named dd something like Ann or Amy...)

It needs to be done before the start of term so I can't even have a look at how others have done it.

Many thanks

There are a few guides on how to do this on the internet. This would seem to be your best guide for embroidering straight onto your DD's PE kit.

Alternatively, you can just do plain . From memory, I had a PE bag at school which my mum made with my name in running stitch, white on a navy background, so it does stand out well and is simple to do.

Seriously though, what is this school thinking? Why will name labels not do on their own? My DH would be foxed if asked to embroider his child's name onto their PE strip, as would many other parents I know. I can just see some bodged jobs turning up at the start of term, and loads of parents not bothering at all.

Also, do you have any tailor's chalk? If not, I'd get some so you have a drawn guide to sew over when you come to stitch her name.

I would probably use backstitch to make the letters - there's a video demonstration here if you need one. It's quite simple when you get the hang of it and makes a neat line of stitches which should make quite readable letters, though I'd make them a lot simpler than her example picture to start out with!

I'd probably put it at the back of the neck for the tops, and at the back waistband for bottoms, to one side of the seam IYSWIM.

I had this problem, science overall had to be embroidered too. Although I can sew, I solved the problem by googling and found a place in our town which machine embroidered both garments in a lovely cursive script for a few pounds. Despite frequent washing (I bought big so lasted for years!) the embroidery looked as good as new and I considered it money well spent.
If you do know anyone already at the school, it might be worth checking how high the letters typically are, I opted for about 2cm and it seemed a sensible size.

I should add, by visible, they meant on left side of chest so teacher could see it while being garment was being worn and shout child's name across science lab etc!

Thank you all. Yes, the aim is that the girls can be identified by the PE teacher across the field, so presumably the letters need to be quite big and bold.

I can remember having to sew my initials onto my PE top ... many years ago. It was an 'airtex' type top, so the holes were perfectly spaced for cross-stitching. Do kids still wear 'airtex' tops for PE?
