Rowan Big Yarn

Just wondering if anyone has knitted anything using Rowan Big Yarn?

DS1 has asked me to knit him a blanket after seeing me knit squares for one of the current Woolly Hugs project, so I thought I would try a log cabin blanket for him (am v good with garter stitch, not so confident with anything else) and wondered if this would be a good yarn choice.

If not the best choice for what I want to do, what would you recommend?

Oops, it's actually Rowan Big Wool I'm talking about.

I knitted a big snoody scarf with it on BIG extreme needles . I used it double to get a firmer knit but I have to say that it worked out very expensive and quite itchy. I would also say that it would be quite heavy to wash as a blanket.

although This lady looks happy

I picked up some on the cheap last winter from a bargain bin because I wanted a big chunky scarf in that colour. Having started and frogged no less than 4 different scarf patterns, I've now gone and turned it into a basketweave cushion for on the sofa which worked alright. It is VERY heavy, as trumpton says, and although it's quite soft to the touch I'm not sure how good it'd be to sit under as a blanket.

Thanks for the feedback - looks like I should give it a miss then.

If you want a cheap acrylic, lots of people are happy with Stylecraft DK and find it lovely and soft and not too squeaky. There are about 51 different shades available too.

I'm partway through a crocheted ripple blanket using it and I'm not 100% convinced yet but I haven't done any since getting home from somewhere hot and humid which I think affected the yarn.

It;s not as nice as the Hug yarn though!

Why not convinced soupy? I thought it was gorgeous.

I've only used it in Antigua somewhere hot and humid and it was vile. I've not had chance to use it here as I've been doing my Hug squares and dealing with a flea problem which happened as all the pets were out of the house.

I do have high hopes that it will be fine without the humid atmosphere which is why I'm happy to recommend it for someone to try... Everyone else seems pleased with it.

I might try the Stylecraft DK for another blanket I want to do, as I think it will go well with some wool I already had.

Made it to the wool dept. in JL this afternoon - on second viewing I actually don't like the Rowan Big Wool.

I'm tempted to stick with the wool I have being using for the Hugs, although DS1 did pick up som Rowan Pure Wool Aran - any views using this for a blanket?

(complete novice at choosing wool, knowing what to use for what project, etc.)

Cottons can be nice for blankets and not too expensive. Tend to be a bit finer though so won't crochet up so quickly.

Interesting Soupy, Antigua? Lucky cow

SoupDragon · 09/08/2012 19:08

It was odd... The yarn kind of shrank thinner and went very squeaky. It improved inside the air conditioned villa which is right on the beach in an all inclusive resort and we go there every two years as I own a timeshare :o

Sirdar Baby Bamboo makes gorgeous blankets. I've only used it for baby blankets though as it would work out kind of pricey for a big one.

DillyTante · 09/08/2012 22:29

Oh how lovely just don't offer to show me your photos

SoupDragon · 10/08/2012 07:48

OK. And anyway I can't as I can't find the cable for my camera or the card reader
