I've been asked to make a chuppah for a wedding in the autumn (canopy thing for a Jewish wedding - examples \link{http://www.shizre-kodesh.com/chuppah/chuppah_patches.jpg\here} and \link{http://www.customchuppah.com/images/chuppah.jpg\here}).
I want to make it personal as they're an eclectic couple (Chinese Australian girl marries Welsh Jewish boy in Nepal), and would like to incorporate symbols of their diverse backgrounds.
The question is, how to get the symbols onto the fabric?
Most of the 'custom' handmade ones I've seen online seem to be based on patchwork or applique, which are way beyond my talents.
Fabric pens etc would need to be used on white material, and I have a hankering to use red and gold (traditional Chinese wedding colours).
Wax resist on silk looks frankly scary, but the results do seem beautiful...
What I really want to do is just print them out and iron them straight onto the fabric to avoid having to do any freehand drawing myself, but realise this might be asking a bit much.
Is there some magic stuff that I could cut into shapes and iron on? Gold would be ideal, but any ideas you have would be gratefully received.
Of course, if anyone is experienced at making chuppahs and want to give me some tips that'd be great...
