I would like to learn to crochet. I was taught in primary school and have forgotten everything. So if anyone can recommend a good book, I'd be very grateful Smile

I taught myself from this book which I found pretty good and the instructions use the British abbreviations rather than the American ones.

I also have the Stitch and Bitch Crochet book too but I ended up using it only to clarify a few things. I think, if I remember rightly, this one does us the US pattern abbreviations.

I learned to crochet by watching videos on you tube. I tried reading books but really needed someone to show me. I found these videos on meet me at mikes great as they show you how to hold the wool and hook and all of the very basics! These videos are instructions how to make granny squares but show a few different stitches.
Happy hooking!

I learnt last summer from a book called Crochet Unravelled.

Google crochet for dummies

You can buy the book from Amazon or just google the bits you need.

I bought a book last week, Guide to Crochet and although it was alright when I googled the "dummies" I found it a lot easier, explained really well with good pictures and everything just seemed to fall into place.

I've been busy practising, single crochet, double crochet and treble crochet and today I'm actually going to attempt to try and make something (small).

I also got a magazine "Lets get Crafting, Knit and Crochet", it's 7.99 but there's nice patterns and you also get wool, hook and Knitting needles. When I got frustrated during the week I steeped away from the crochet for a while and knitted DD a purse for school

Thanks all. Are the US and UK abbreviations very different, then?

I've also got Crochet Unravalled. There's also a Patons beginners crochet book which I've got somewhere but can't find so haven't got the exact title. You tube is good too.

But totally beware the difference in USA and UK stitches. I got myself tied up into confused knots trying to work this out! Won't go into details as don't want to get you confused! But it's more to do with the same stitches having different names in US. Double crochet UK is different from double crochet US.

UK => US
Slip stitch -slip stitch
Double crochet - single crochet
Treble crochet - double crochet

The US ones are just one "smaller" than the UK ones.

Definitely 'Crochet for Dummies', taught myself how to crochet from scratch using this book, explains everything really well. Recommended it to others who have also found it really easy to learn from too. Doesn't assume you know stuff already like so many other books...
