What kind of glue to use?

I have a couple of old wooden kitchen chairs and would like to decorate them with decoupage - scraps of paper in different colours to make a patchwork effect. What kind of glue should I use? I presume I will have to put on several layers of varnish afterwards.

You can buy branded Decopatch glue on eBay and at Hobbycraft. It's supposed to be a combination of glue and varnish. I've always wondered if it's just expensive PVA but for a chair you'd want it to be pretty hard wearing so I'd invest in the proper stuff I think.

It is better than pva. You could try modgepodge too. Apparantly meant to be good.

I'd second Modgepodge - get the waterproof one, it stands up to anything :)

Any decoupage I've done has always been with pva, I just water it down very slightly. If its for furniture thats being used a lot, I put a layer of clear varnish over it to make it hardwearing.

Got something called ModgePodge from Amazon and did not have much success. Was trying to glue map of the world to chipboard which had been painted white. Firstly the glue dried so fast that it was nearly dry at the top before I had managed to slap it onto the board at the bottom, then the map didn't seem to stick well and developed a ripple/bubbly effect. Reinforced the edges with drawing pins and didn't bother to varnish with another layer as it was so bad. Also, used half the pot for one not v big project.

Where did I go wrong? Should I have thinned it? With water? Or just used PVA?
