Does anyone know where i can get short pencils and writing grips?

DS1 has ASD and struggles to write with normal length pencils. School have said they use shorter pencils and grips to help him but I can't find any. I can find short colouring pencils but not writing pencils. Any ideas? I've already looked in WHsmith and Hobbycraft.

Would using a hacksaw and cutting some down work?

Look on ebay- there are loads there. None of the high street shops seem to stock - I know I have tried everyone.

grips

Surely all pencils become shorter pencils quite easily? Either cut off the end or sharpen them smaller

ikea and other shops have small pencils for you to use in store, a couple of those might solve your problem.
Short pencils also sold in multipacks for party bags, try that bit of your supermarket.

loads here The handiwriter worked miracles for DS1

I hunted everywhere for grips for ds who struggles with writing and is left handed. I found stabilio do a really good ergo pencil for left handed writing which he got on really well with - they do right handed ones too - i'll see if I can find a link...

here it is

ohchristFENTON · 16/07/2012 11:36

They do them in whs and tesco last time I looked.

Thanks - this is great. He is left handed too (just to add to his difficulties) so I that one you've linked to ohchristFENTON is great. I like the look of the multipack of grips so that we can try different ones.

Yes I could chop the pencils we have in 2 but I thought they might splinter. I just thought there might be a place to look for short pencils that I hadn't thought of. Ikea is a bit of a trek but the party bag packs is a good idea. Will try the supermarkets. I've run out of nappies so have to go this afternoon anyway!

Hi, my ds is left handed and uses these at school, [[http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/310401178624?var=lv

Staples do packs of short propelling pencils which are about half the length of the normal ones. They can be a problem if you don't get the propelling right, though.

They also do packs of pencil grips.

DS1 has AS/dyspraxia and is left handed so I feel your pain. I never found the shaped pens and pencils to be much good for him - he could never work out where to put his fingers even when there were finger shaped grooves in them. The best things have been the triangular shaped pencil grips or failing that, the soft round ones although even with those he used to push them up the pencil out of the way. Hmm

Thank goodness he is old enough for hand writing pens now and doesn't really need grips.

if you cannot find the grips, a big lump of blu tac is very effective, and short pencils come in those school maths kits.

PathOfLeastResitance · 03/08/2012 10:02

The ferby pencils are lovely and come in 2 lengths. They do all sorts of pencils but the colours are super nice.

We have tried loads and loads for DS (HFA) - what he found worked best for him was several rubber bands on an ikea pencil - seriously.
