My parents (well, my mum mostly!) are getting DD a sewing machine for her birthday next month. She will be 5. This is the one they've ordered:
www.amazon.co.uk/Hyundai-8-Stitch-Sewing-Machine/dp/B005C8JY5W, has anyone used it/seen it/etc? Comments?

Help me think of other stuff she'll need to go with it - other than 24/7 access to my remnant bin :o

Also, does anyone know of a particularly good "teaching kids to sew" type book she could have too?

Thanks!

If DD was older I would say NO!
But she is only five so i think this is a good first machine for her. Its a step up from a toy one.

I doubt it will cope with heavier fabrics though.

I would give her a sewing box filled with
Cotton
Ready filled bobbins
Large Headed Pins
Needles
Tailor's chalk (the pencil ones probably best)
Felt squares.
Some cheap fat quarters
Retractable tape measure.
Ribbon/buttons/trimmings.

Thats should keep her busy.

Have a look on Amazon for kid's sewing books. I have a few that come with the materials you need to complete the projects. I cant remember what they are called though sorry!

I got my own DD one of these last year & at then 8 she is older, but she was nervous of using my machine as it was too fast for her & I couldn't get a hold of the old style hand operated ones I learnt on myself -

It is what it is, nothing fancy, quite slow which is great for beginners & won't handle anything with much weight or size, so she won't be using it to knock out her first catwalk collection, but its been a perfect first electric machine for her - fine with making dolls clothes, cushions, soft toys, decorating Ts etc - which is all she's interested in doing just yet.

The one thing I will add, is make sure you do have a lower table than standard, as the cable isn't that long - something that caught us on the hop as we no longer have the toddler tables etc - thankfully an old fold out kitchen one came to the rescue - but we were stumped in the beginningConfused

Also Argos do a great sewing box, that has all the bits you will need in it, just add some cloth scraps & she'll be set up :)

I'd also recommend looking out for a book on soft toys with scaled patterns, I still have the old one I learnt to sew with as a DC, which DD is currently wading through - its starts from 2 piece toys, up to many pieces & costumes & dolls clothes too

I learnt with this old one here & it has some great scaled simple patterns

Fab, thanks - I'll check out the box & book suggestions this evening Smile
