hi does anyone know is baby DK the same gauge as ordinary DK? I'd love to knit some baby knits but in funkier colours than the ones I've been seeing across the Baby yarn ranges..tia

Yes they are, the only one i have found that is a bit different is Peter Pan DK.

The baby ones are usually a little thinner I thought.

Thanks for replies! Whenever I see a list of yarn gauges the baby DK is never mentioned though. The baby knitting book I have states to use Sublime baby DK, (expensive apart from anything else). The plot thickens! Anyone else knit baby clothes any what yarn do you use? :)

A good way to work out substitutes is to check that the weight and the meterage of the yarns are the same.
I'm knitting a baby coat in sublime dk (which is the same gauge as the sublime baby dk, just nicer colours); the actual pattern states king cole merino dk, which is a cheaper option but still same gauge. King cole merino has a brilliant range of colours, brights and pastels.

The Sublime is expensive but it's gorgeous to knit with and washes really well.

The gauges will be the same on most DK baby yarns (22st to 30 rows). What will be different is the amount of yarn you get on the ball because it might be lighter than say, a merino DK. You would have make sure you bought the right amount of yarn by comparing the metrage of the pattern yarn with yarn you want to buy.

If you want brighter colours than most baby yarn, you could do worse than look at Patons Fairytale Dreamtime. Bright colours, 100% soft wool.

Both the King Cole merino and the Patons look fab, and just the sort of substitutions I was looking for :) Think I'll choose from one of those and do one of those test guage squares (that will be a first for me Blush )

The other thing to bear in mind, in the words of the great Zimmerman, "babies come in all sizes" (probably not all sizes, actually - like not 300 kg for example).

You should be able to substitute fairly easily, although I love the Baby Crofter shades.
