Proofreading Craft books and magazines

Do any of you do this? Or is anyone in the publication industry?

I'm completing a proofreading course at the moment and wondering where to go from here.

Having come across my 2nd pattern that has mistakes in it, I can't help but wonder if designers get their work checked and if this is something I could progress myself. But how?

Any suggestions?

It depends whether you mean proof readers or tech editors, as both are very different jobs (and it's likely a mistake in a pattern would come under tech editing)

Designers do get their work checked - usually by their editor for language and style, and/or a tech editor for, well, the technical side of things. In books the tech editing would be commissioned out by the editor/publication house.

Not entirely 100% how you'd get into editing as I don't work in books, but I'd guess editors are hired as proper FT employees by publishing houses iyswim. Tech editors usually have a raft of design experience and then advertise themselves freelance ime, and publication houses will often have their favourites.

thanks for the reply. My course is now done so I've to figure out how to progress it and what type of subjects I'd like to look at. It's very competitive and I think it's going to be hard to get into.
