Granny squares - how much of pesky ends do you need to hide?

I am making a granny square blanket and have what feels like a zillion squares and growing. I've changed colour every round so there are a LOT of ends. How much do I need to weave in the pesky ends?
Do you darn them in with a needle or just crochet them into the stitches in the next round iyswim?

TIA :)

With granny squares I do it with a needle.

Some of the ladies at my knitting group glue the ends in....

I tidy mine in as I go so there is only one end to deal with for each square (for the last round). I think I got the technique from the Attic24 blog.

Sorry been trying to find a link but I can't so I will have to try and explain. I lay the ends along the edge of the last colour and just crochet over the top iyswim. So if you do a treble crochet for example, the stitch will be made into the space between two stitches on the row before and sort of wraps itself around the top of that previous row (God I wish I had pictures it would be so much easier).

Anyway, if you lay the ends along the top of the previous row when you do your stitch into the space below you also wrap the yarn around the ends. I never thought it would work when I read about it but strangely the ends don't show, well, not so you would notice.

I will keep looking for the pictures - it is easier. When you say 'crochet them int0 the stitches in the next round' you might already have got what I mean although they aren't actually crochet in as covered up.

Bertha - yes I think we're on the same wave length. :)
But that only tucks them in for the length of 3tr as when you move to the next one you get a loop that doesnt really look tidy to me.

How much of the end do you tuck in? 1cm, 2 or nearer 10?
(slightly paranoid about it unravelling) Blush

Sometimes I"ll crochet over the for a bit and then darn them back in the opposite direction. I agree that it looks messy if you crochet over them where there is a "hole" like in a granny square.

Catsmamma · 20/04/2012 07:58

I do it as I go, crochet over them, but if there is a gap I weave them in and out of the top of those stitches and then crochet over them at the next block.

I also tie a knot as I swap the yarn over! But don't tell anyone.

BigBoobiedBertha · 20/04/2012 08:18

I chop them off after the 3 trebles and I haven't had a problem. One end is slip-knotted around the old yarn so that isn't going to come undone and the the bit that hasn't been slip-knotted (is that even the right word) is the old colour and shouldn't come undone either if the slip knot is tight enough.

This is the closest I can find to an explanation in Attic 24 and even that is much of a written explanation.

i stitch it in, but i do it at the end.

with a darning needle, and i stitch in about 4 cm of a 10cm thread, then cut off the excess.
