I am making a blanket for a friend, and got all the stuff (finally)
but now it turns out that my satin blanket binding is quite thin and you can see the pattern of the fabric through it

do you know where I can buy thicker, nicer binding? or is there a way of making it so i can't see the pattern through:?

this is the first time i've done anything like this

Can you use it double?

thisisyesterday · 17/04/2012 22:20

no it won't be wide enough then :(

Could you use some plain bias binding underneath to hide the pattern?

Jellykat · 17/04/2012 22:41

Double as in 2 layers? or how about ironing on vilene to the back of the binding to make it less transparent? or edging the blanket in a plain strip of fabric first?

KurriKurri · 17/04/2012 22:43

Sorry I meant double it lengthways so it's the same width but twice as thick (you'll need twice as much though)

I think jellycat's idea of edging the blanket with a plain fabric then putting the binding on would work well.

Jellykat · 17/04/2012 22:58

Thought that was what you meant Kurri Smile

Now do you know how bad it would be to cover piping cord for a cushion, with fabric not cut on the bias- Will i get away with it? (Sorry quick hijack)

KurriKurri · 17/04/2012 23:47

I think you will get a better result if you cut the fabric on the bias jellycat, it will go round the corners of your cushion much more smoothly.

ohhh i see. that might work yes. Or I might give up on the satin binding and just use something else entirely.

or is there another way to make it look nice round the edge without binding

thisisyesterday - how about a Blanket stitch in a nice embroidery thread (you can get a reasonable quality one at @ 28p per skein) or wool? depending on the thickness of your blanket..

(Hmm Kurri, trouble is my fabric is @1/3 metre piece although 60 wide, thats a lot of seams if i cut on the bias Sad.. Will bite the bullet though for a better finish, thanks!)

on a scale of 1-10 how hard is blanket stitch. I am a novice.

would it be easier or harder than sewing binding on? Grin

I think i need to have a practice with some offcuts and see what I can do. I have plenty of plain cotton so could bind with that and then the satin on top, it'll jujst take me longer.

hmm

Blanket stitch is very easy thisisyesterday, - I'm not sure about harder or easier - probably easier I'd say. But if you have a raw edge round your blanket, it might be better to go for the binding, - otherwise you'd have to finish the edges off before blanket stitch.

I guess you could make your own binding in satin fabric, and you could do it so it folded inwards like bias binding which would give you a double thickness. IYSWIM - e.g. you cut a four inch strip and fold in an inch on each side and iron in place then sew to you blanket. But like jellycat's cushion strips, you'd have to cut your fabric on the bias, and join it into long strips. (there's lots of tutorials - just google how to make a bias binding, or something similar.)
