Buying a sewing machine. Anyone own a janome?

Looking at sewing machines and like the look of this janome machine.

I'm going to be doing dressmaking, crafts, hemming and hopefully some quilting and free machine embroidery. This seems to tick all the boxes, but would love to get any advice on the make and features.

Thanks!

I've not tried that particular model, but I have a Janome DC3050 and absolutely love it - I've done a Queen sized quilt on it without any bother whatsoever, and you can tonnes of extra feet etc for it.

I have a Janome and love it. However that one you have linked to looks quite pricey for a relatively basic model. I bought the SL30X from Costco for about £200 - it is fully computerized, has loads more stitches, automatic buttonhole function etc. If you can stretch your budget it might be worth a slightly more upmarket model, depending on what you want to use it for.

I believe the John Lewis own brand machines are all manufactured by Janome as well Smile

Scratch that I see yours has the buttonhole too Smile

I do like a see-through bobbin cover though. And mine has a nifty automatic knot function. But maybe not worth the extra £30...

I have that one! DH paid £100 for it from a little shop near us. I love it, it's really light and easy to use. It can handle practicallly anything too!

I have this one. Possibly overkill Blush. But I'd strongly recommend Janome kit in general.

The only thing I find with mine, at least, is that it helps to buy the proper Janome bobbins because the cheapie ones are a bit too short and rattle about in the bobbin case as you sew.

Thanks r3! Good to know the little things like that :-)

I have a Janome & get on well with it.

I would say about yours is that I would ALWAYS buy a top loading bobbin machine - sometimes called drop in bobbin (the one you lined to has a front loading bobbin). Top loaders are mechanically a better design & you tend to have more bobbin issues with the front loading ones. Top loading bobbin machines tend to be a bit more expensive than the front loaders.

with top loading bobbin

Janomes are great. No problems with mine at all and I have given it some good workouts over various projects!!

neverquitesure · 24/04/2012 15:25

I also have the DC3050

I've had some time now and have nothing but praise for it. Lovely machine. I've used it for all manner of projects and fabrics and it never let's me down.

Arghh bloody iPhone autocorrect. Lets. It never lets me down. Can't stand errant apostrophes!!
