crochet wool weight question

I am about to start a project that is an american pattern and asks me to use Bulky/12 ply (7 wpi) wool, would any of you clever crafty people happen to know what brands/kinds of wool that is in the UK? Would it be also bulky or would it have a different name? I really hope that makes sense (it did in my head, written down? Not so much..)

According to this it is a chunky yarn.

You could try one of these

McPopcornMouseNFries · 16/04/2012 13:59

Iirc, Rowan Big Wool is classed as "bulky" and is very easy to get here.

BigBoobiedBertha · 16/04/2012 14:04

Because it is mainly a US site Ravelry uses the term bulky but they do have a big list of possible yarns.

I think Rowan Big is what they call Super Bulky

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, pattern is from ravelry, when I asked in our local shop and told the sales person what i have just told you she looked at me and said "No you need dk, why would you want chunky?" so I felt a bit Blush

should have come on mn first methinks

Is the pattern recommending a yarn? Could you have a look at the yarn on Ravelry and see what the tension is for knitting? That would give you some idea of what you are looking for as a substitute.

BigBoobiedBertha · 16/04/2012 14:18

And I don't think you need to be Blush! Sounds like the wool shop owner doesn't know their stuff. I reckon the clue is in the name - bulky doesn't sound like DK to me!Smile

PurplePidjin · 16/04/2012 14:38

Dk is 10 ply. Is it aran that's the next one up?

BigBoobiedBertha · 16/04/2012 16:26

According to Wiki and Ravelry DK is 8 ply or light worsted, Aran is worsted and 10 ply and chunky is bulky or 12 ply.

I find it all a bit Confused!!

Does it say what size hook to use? That might be a clue...

BigBoobiedBertha · 16/04/2012 21:01

I like the Stylecraft Special DK - I am using it for a granny stripes blanket and it is nice and soft and not easily bobbly. The chunky should be nice too. Smile

rococopops · 17/04/2012 12:59

Oooh, I used stylecraft dk for my granny stripes blanket BigBoobiedBertha it comes out really nice doesn't it? It has a really nice "drapey" comforting quality.

It is very cuddly yes. Or it would be if I had finished it and wasn't worried about accidentally ripping back half a row while I have a go at wrapping myself up in it. I must have been working on it for the best part of 2 years. Blush
