Does anyone know what this lace pattern is, please?

I saw a beautiful shawl at the weekend which looked like real butterfly wings. It was exquisite and had a wavy edging.

The lady who knitted it said it was a Nowegian 'something' pattern, very lacy and almost like a goosefoot print though it. all I remember is that she mentioned binding three stitches together then plain and purl. Confused

I have hunted through Ravely and many other lace knitting sites but cannot find this pattern.

Does this pattern ring any bells?

Is it the Norwegian Wood Pattern here?

AspirinDonkeys · 16/04/2012 11:33

Thanks, angelpantser.

I saw that one yesterday and it is not 'The One'. The Norwegian Wood one is beautiful but looks very complex to knit. The lady said her shawl was only plain and purl yet it looked very fine and lacy.

The Norwegian 'something' one seemed to have a definite rib (like you would see on a seashell) and made the shawl look like a bird's wing. I am going to have to stalk track down the lady who knitted it.

She knitted it in two parts then joined it in the middle with an open sort of stitch.

Drat, that didn't go as planned.Blush

Try again!

Thank you Bertha. I had a good snoop around your link site and this one is about the closest I could find but it does not have the distinctive bird foot sort of repeat through it.

I wonder how difficult it would be to knit given that I am not a great knitter. Grin

So is the shape of the shawl the butterfly wings then? With the goose foot pattern on it? I am a bit confused.

I am intrigued now though. I have just spent a very happy half hour looking at knitting patterns and I have found some lovely ones but probably not what you are after.

If you find it, put me out of my misery and post a picture please. Smile

The shawl at first looks like a wide lacy scarf but the way she has designed it, it opens up just like the wings of a butterfly. She handspun the wool and had every colour of the rainbow in it.

The overall pattern was very lace like but had a distinctive repeat goosefoot pattern through it. The whole shawl had a rib, just like on a seashell so it gave an almost pleated effect.

The next market is a month away but I will make it my Life Project to find the lady and shawl. Selfishly, I hope it was not sold
It was really warm and so unusual.

Ah I see. Smile

Do you know the name of the lady or what the stall was called? You have probably tried this but does she have a website?

Or could you go to the market website and see if her stall is listed there and maybe you could see if she is going to another market nearby in the near future?

AspirinDonkeys · 16/04/2012 13:28

Yes, that is a good idea, Bertha. The fruit stall man would know - he has been there forever plus he has a shop in the town. He knows everyone so would know the knitting lady.

The shawl was all wafty and Stevie Nicks. < fallen in love with a shawl emoticon>

I know what you mean about falling in love with a shawl.

I am rather taken with this

Knitting your own shawl/veil would have been seen as very naff when I got married years ago but that is such a lovely thing. I even like the orange.

AspirinDonkeys · 16/04/2012 14:38

That shawl is utterly gorgeous!

I love the Shetland cobweb wedding ring shawls too but very few people seem to knit them for Christenings or weddings nowadays.

I found this link for free lace patterns and some of them are really beautiful but I think that your wedding shawl one wins the lot.

DutchOma has a page on Ravelry that she has a wonderful shawl on. She also is on MN under the same name. She might be able to help if you PM her ( sorry for taking advantage of you DutchOma...by the way I am ready to start the 2 ply cardi anyday now )

AspirinDonkeys · 17/04/2012 12:26

A little bird Wink told me that DutchOma's shawls have won first prize at the Royal Highland Show.
Which makes her one of the best knitters in the UK.
