I'd like to make my DD a patch work blanket/ quilt. Never done one before, and was wondering what the best material would be (I cant knit).

If you want to sew it, most people use 100% cotton, there are loads and loads of quilting websites with patterns that you can use.

If you want to knit/crochet, then ravelry is your best bet, in terms of yarn, it depends how washable you want it to be really...

Lotta work for something baby will puke on!
DD is doing a crazy patchwork quilt using my machine, it looks quite good, quickly knocked up a baby-size top.

Porbably wont use it for a while, because it will take me a long time to make. Ill have a look at the cotton suggestion. I saw flannel material or 100% cotton, and wasnt sure which would be best.

I think in general you could make it from anything, but you do need to make all the squares from the same type of material, otherwise it might shrink differently when it is washed.

I think it's a lovely idea :)

you can do a totally flannel quilt, but your choice of fabrics will be limited.

Maybe do the top (pathworky bit) as cotton and the backing as flannel. Lovely! There are many many patterns out there, do you prefer modern or traditional?

traditional: something like this

Modern: something like www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/03/charm-squares-baby-quilt-redux.html

Modern quilts are simple designs, usually on white background, using lots of fresh bright coloured fabrics. Traditional quilts are often fussier and more complex.

The actual quilting (the sewing of the patchwork top, through the squishy layer to the backing layer) is simple in modern quilts, but fussy in traditional quilts.

MOdern quilts are, I think, better for novice quilters. The link above to the "oh frannson!" website - she has some gorgeous quilts and some great tutorials.

I would recommend using only cotton fabric and cotton, bamboo or woolen wadding and cotton or brushed cotton for the backing all of which are easy to find on eBay where you will lots of lovely shops that sell 'fat quarters' which is a pre-cut length of fabric 18 inches by 22 inches (not sure what that is in new money). I always wash the cotton before I cut the squares in case of shrinkage or colour running and it also washes out any residual chemicals in the fabric finishing.

Treat yourself to a book like this one to get you started - a bargain at £6.99.
