Knitting pattern for DK can I convert it to Chunky wool?

I have a great pattern for a cardi, using DK wool. I would like to make a heavier weight cardi using chunky wool.

Does anyone know if its possible to do this, ie how much chunky wool would I need? Is there a formulae to convert DK to chunky.

Hope this is understandable! And that someone can advise me.

I don't think this is possible, sorry. The number of stitches is worked out for the yarn specified, so the decreases/increases would not be the same and it wouldn't work if there was a pattern of some sort. You could use a different yarn of the same weight, having checked the tension, but you couldn't just use a chunkier yarn with bigger needles. Have you looked at patterns on Ravelry? You can search for patterns by yarn weight, there are loads of patterns, many of them free downloads, so you are likely to find something just as nice.

The only time I've done this successfully is for a blanket pattern, just working out how many metres of yarn I need and converting that to balls of my chosen yarn. But a blanket just comes out bigger or smaller, proportions don't come into it. I agree that you'd be better looking for a chunky yarn pattern in similar style.

If you want to convince yourself you could try doing a tension square on the needles specified in the pattern: cast on however many stitches it says for the 10cm in the pattern, do the required number of rows and cast off. Then measure the square and if it comes out no more than 11cm it might just work, although the feel of it might be a bit solid and stiff.

I don't think it will work, as others have said you would be better to find a pattern that uses chunky yarn.

Thanks for the replies. I had not thought about the the increasing and decreasing! Oh well, back to the drawing board.
