Probably stoopid question re knitting pattern - help please!

I'm knitting a sweater for ds2. The back was fine, the sleeves easy. Am on the front now and have to do something I've never done before:

"pattern 24, turn, leave remaining 40 stitches on stitch holder."

So... talk me through it please? I knit the first 24 stitches as they are, I get that bit, and from then on I'll only be working on those, right? And the rest of the stitches are on the holder - but where does the 'turn' bit come in? How?

Grateful for any help please!

You turn as the 24 stitches are what you are working on -ie the 40 stitches are left to wrk on later

Let me see if I can explain. After 24 stitches, you stop, turh the needles over and reknit the 24 stitches.

Does that help?

for turh, read switch, sorry!

I think so! Thanks. Does it matter which way I put the stitch holder in?!

When you have done the 24 stitches you turn and work those 24 stitches again as you would when you get to the end of any row. You are basically splitting the row in two and working them separately.

Just another way of saying what everybody else has said. Smile

Presumably you are shaping the neck?

slowginny · 05/04/2012 21:48

It will when you come to pick up the stitches and knit those bits but personally I wing it and hope for the best!

Turning is such a useful skill to pick up, gets used loads for collars and socks when you need to make the garment more three dimensional.

What you are talking about is shaping. When you shapes things such as the neck you can only work one side at a time, hence the "work 24 stitches, turn, leave remaining stitches on a stitch holder".

So, work the 24 stitches and put the others on the holder (try not to twist the stitches as you put them on the holder), turn the needle (with the 24 stitches on) and carry on.

BigBoobiedBertha · 05/04/2012 21:50

It doesn't much matter. What matters is how you transfer the stitches back to the needle when it come to rejoining the thread and starting to knit up the other side. Make sure the stitches aren't twisted and all face the same way iyswim.
