I don't quite know where to start.
I have googled and seen some great ideas but they all look quite complicated. she is supposed to be a Goodoo fish ( its green). What can I do that is not too difficult.
I have previously made tiger masks from papier mache around a ballon. How can I adapt to get a fish face? Or is it easier to do something on a hoodie like this.

What about going to the supermarket and asking if you can have some of the rounded packaging that some fruit is packed in? If you cut them up, they'd look like scales.

Add a bit of glitter and use a glue gun (I love my glue gun!) to stick them to whatever base clothing you are going to use.

Depending on the size of the child, I have used pillow cases as abase several times, they are already sewn up on 3 sides, just cut holes for head and arms.

Pillowcase is a good start with fabric pens (or felt tips) to draw scales

Maybe a ruff round her neck as gills (use crepe paper, concertina it & pull elastic through? or do that foldy thing where you lay two strips at right angles and fold backwards & forwards to make a chain type thing)

Stick a fin (again folded crepe paper) along the back

She is 9 and really tall.
A pillowcase sadly wouldn't come too far down on her.

The fruit packaging sounds interesting but I don't have a glue gun Envy.

I have got lots of cardboard and we are going to see if we can construct anything fish shaped, otherwise I will be panicking again. - Watch this space later. Grin

Green hoody and leggings/skinny jeans. Have you got a hobbycraft nearby? They do loads of felt and also fabric glue.

Buy two different shade of green felt, white and black. Use a pen to draw round a saucer onto the green felt. Cut out loads of circles, then cut them in half. Starting at the bottom of the hoody, spread glue along the flat edge of the semicircle and stick down the first row. Stick the second row down so they overlap, a bit like roof tiles. Keep going til you run out of hoody.

Cut two saucer sized circles from white felt. Cut two mug sized circles from black felt. Stick the black circles onto the white circles. When dry, stick one either side of the hood.

If you're feeling adventurous, cut a tail shape from green felt and stick to the bottom back of the hoody. You could also make green felt mittens for fins by drawing four leaf shapes, stick together with glue around the long sides, slide onto hands.

Green face paint, draw in scales with kohl if feeling creative Grin

Ok so I have made a fish by covering her old rainbows tabbard in scales made from craft foam stapled and glued together and stapled onto her tabbard. ( a bit like the one on the link in my OP but much smaller scales. We have made a tail back and front hanging from the bottom, and have added fins at the shoulders.

I have no idea how to do the head of the fish .

The letter sent home said they would be face painting all children. will go and talk to the teacher tomorrow to see what he has to say.

Charity shop for a long dress or nightie in fish colours possibly sparkly.Make a pencil skirt/dress out of it fashion a tail around the bottom in felt, hair scraped back and face painted greenish with red fish lips and a few scales painted on her face. I make costumes for the local dance school and i hint at what the character is rather than make a full blown transformation.

Ok so, a photo of what I have done so far is on my photos - what shall I do for her head?

Your profile isn't public so I can't look, but I'm sure it's fab

For a head, how about a woolly hat with felt/foam eyes?

alison222 · 18/03/2012 20:06

Oops Blush. It is public now. The hat idea would be easy. Ponders how to decorate woolly hat to match the rest......

That is fantastic!!

Read my post above, but use a hat instead of the hood of a hoody?

KatyMac · 18/03/2012 20:57

Amazing!!!
