I want to line the inside of an old retro suitcase with wrapping paper - how do I do it?

So something a bit like this but for the kids bedroom rather than as a hamper for guests who are lucky if they get a sleeping bag and towel in this house

Probably a daft question but I'm not at all crafty so what would I use to stick the paper down with?! And is there a technique? How do you stop it looking a bit crap around the edges?

Hey when I clicked on your link I was directed to the storage link! Got rather confused then scrolled across to find that you probably meant the blue suit case with the flowery paper didnt you?!
To be honest with you it depends on what type of suitcase you have and how steady/how much patience you have.
If it is just a bog standard hard case this is what you do:
1.Measure the inside surface of the case that you want to cover exactly (dont bother with the inside lip for now as its too fiddley! Plus like The White Company have done the have only done the inside and not the sides.) Wriet down these measurements.

  1. Decide which material you would like to use. Thick good quality wrapping paper, fabric in a lovely design, thick wall paper, fablon (pre sticky lino type paper used for book covering).
  2. Prepare the surface of the suitcase, make sure it is all clean and dry.
  3. Cut your piece of covering to the exact dimensions (make a little mark in pencil in one corner so you know which side is which!). Use a stanley knife (blade craft knife) with a metal ruler and something underneath eg thick newspaper or cutting mat.
  4. If you have used:
Fablon-peel the corner off and apply to the bottom corner and push out slowly and carefully its best not to rush with this and looks lovely when theres no air bubbles as time taken to apply. Wallpaper/thickpaper-buy from a proper stationary shop (student art suppliers are good) spray extra strong adhesive bond in a can. Follow the instructions but most of them say spray on surface and spray on paper, wait two seconds and apply as above. (may help to use masking tape around the edges of the area to be covered so glue doesnt sprad around the edges of the suitcase when spraying. Fabric-the above glue should work also but if you have a soft or cloth interior on your suitcase then you may have to use fabric glue. REMEMBER TO USE PLENTY OF NEWSPAPER ON THE FLOOR/TABLE to stop messes ruining the rest of your furniture. Wear gloves and ventilate properly. Hope this helps. You may be able to tell I do this kinda stuff alot! Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

Just thought too....why not spray paint/paint in emulsion the bit you want wrapping instead and then put stencils on it n spray paint a design in a contrasting colour? Save fiddling with paper idea!!

Fizzy - thank you I like that idea too! Not going to have chance to do it this weekend but will have a crack the following one. Thank you again for all your advice
