A sewing machine for people who don't normally sew?

I'm part of a small children's charity and we need a sewing machine that volunteers can use to make simple things like bunting, sewing hems, easy costumes, etc - so it needs to be robust, not do anything complicated and easy to use.

We have about £150 to spend (could find a bit more) but would like it to be as cheap as possible.

Is the perfect machine out there?

TIA x

I have a Brother one, its about five years old and excellent (I use it all the time).
Simple thread up, marked by 1,2,3.
Drop in bobbin case.
When I have to replace it it would be for another.

Also, you could speak to a service / repair shop, they may sell reconditioned ones like Janome which are more heavy duty.

www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk/sewing-machine/janome/janome-j3-24-sewing-machine.htm i have this one, great machine really easy to use. They have other Janome models on this site that are cheaper too.

Meant to add, my 8 year old dd has even mastered using it, so very staight forward for beginner to use.

When I was bought my beautiful machine for my birthday last year, the very knowledgeable man said not to get a Brother unless you've money to spend.

There was one in the shop, sliced in two. I could see the way it was built - I went in wanting a Brother machine but instantly changed my mind. It was basically made from one piece of plastic. Even the reel holder was part of the main machine. If the spindle breaks, the machine has had it as it cannot be replaced.

It's up to you but that's my experience. With your budget you're better off seeing of you can get a 2nd hand machine by Janome or Juki (even Singer machines aren't that good these days). Try calling your local machine specialist shops. If you must buy new, then maybe you could get an ex-display model. That's what I did and got £50 off Grin
