Would you buy a cushion like this one if it had your child's drawing on it?

I'm considering opening a tiny bijoux etsy shop to sell made to order pillows, cushions, pictures etc based on the purchaser's drawing. Does that make you go ooooo or urgghh? Also, what would you pay? I'm not after massive volume, more a steady trickle. I had thought about £30? Too much or too little? Thank you in advance.

I think it's a nice gift, but I have seen them on notonthehighstreet before now for about £30+. DD's not yet making anything apart from squiggles, I am sure when she is older she may have some better sketching techniques and I might consider something special or that she is particularly proud of being converted into a cushion.

Molehillmountain · 12/03/2012 18:09

It's lovely. If I were had more disposable income I'd def buy them, that seems a fair price

Moomoomie · 12/03/2012 18:37

I think it is a niche market.
Something the grandparents would like.
Personally I would not buy one for myself, my MIL would love it as a present though.( if I spent £30 on a present for her)

Stitchthis · 12/03/2012 19:16

Niche is ok at the moment. I looked on notonthehighstreet - £45 for machine embroidery... I might dare to go up from £30 then! Any other thoughts?

Definitely go for it then.
Could you also include the child's name and date of drawing on it too?

belcantwait · 12/03/2012 19:50

Do you know I didnt expect to like it but actually I think it's lovely. I personally would prefer the background/trimming to be plain and a bit less kind of twee but maybe you could give that as an option. Worth between £30 to £40 I reckon Smile

Flubba · 12/03/2012 19:55

Def. include what Moomoomie suggests.

mnistooaddictive · 12/03/2012 19:59

I would pay about £10 as a fundraiser for school, but otherwise no way.

HippyHippopotamus · 12/03/2012 19:59

Very similar to something I make! I haven't advertised on web or else I'd be suspicious! I start my prices at £30 ie if I get a complicated drawing I charge more

Stitchthis · 12/03/2012 20:56

I could do two styles - linen and natural thread colours (Kelly Hoppen stylee) and patchwork/brights.....hmmmmm.....

hippo I Made my cushion almost 2 years ago off my own bat...I've only recently thought about a commercial version.

I'm with belcantwait -- I didn't expect to like it but in fact it's quite cute and tasteful and I'd definitely strongly consider it as a present for grandparents.

AuntieBacterial · 12/03/2012 21:23

I think it's lovely too, and I'm not a fluffy sort of person so hope that means you have a potentially wide market. I would pay £30 to get one for MIL etc, but not too much more. Good luck with it!

LuckyLuckyMe · 12/03/2012 21:30

Another person who thought they wouldn't like it but it's really lovely. I would love one, as would DM and MIL.

As was already mentioned the option of the name and date would be great.

Best of luck.

HippyHippopotamus · 13/03/2012 10:39

stitchthis, sorry if you got the wrong impression. I wasn't suggesting you had copied me, it's obviously a coincidence that we've come up with the same idea. What i was trying to say is that these do sell at £30. Personally I prefer having a 'from' price just in case you get a drawing that's really complicated

What I would recommend you do is get some drawings that your friends children have done. Doing my own child's picture was so different to someone else's. It also means you'll have a few to photograph as examples.

Apologies again and lots of luck with your etsy shop.

Stitchthis · 13/03/2012 10:47

No worries hippo, sorry if I got a little flouncy there. On re-reading it was a little ahem, curt.

Yes, the 'from' pricing is a good idea. Thanks.

I'm thinking I might try a very soft start from May (I've got other stuff to clear first) and try to snag a couple of Fathers Day orders. I will struggle with time, that's my main worry, but I'll never know unless I try...

Thanks everyone for your comments. Any more, constructive, advice very much appreciated.

Also, it's v interesting that so many thought it would be a bit twee. I will bear that in mind. I dont want twee. Unless of course it sells is popular!

Would you consider using materials from the kiddies clothing as part of the decoration? I think that could add another dimension.

cocoplops · 13/03/2012 12:03

I think its lovely. Not sure I could stretch to £30 for a cushion - but I think its a fair price given its hand-crafted and so lovely.Would love it as a present for Mother's Day or whatever. I don't think its too twee (but then poss my taste is towards the twee!!!

Would also be interested in other smaller/cheaper items - jute/canvas bag, iphone case, etc. I would be more likely to buy something like that for myself.
