We've been talking quite a lot on the main thread about getting the stitches right for a particular square with a lovely heart design in it. You need to be registered on Ravelry to see it here or with the designer's website (also free) to see it here.

The race is on to see whether any of us can complete it without going completely insane at the difficulty of some of the patterns, so we are having a (supportive) 'heart-off' this weekend to try and get it done without flooding the main thread with messages about it.

On the cast list so far are: GleamingHeels, MinnieBar and me, but all are welcome - beware though, you have to supply your own valium.

I've just recharted it to get it down to a size that will knit out to (about) 6", so have chopped out 4 rows of border from the bottom, 2 stitches of border from the sides and 2 stitches of the plain bit between the outer and inner border. So I'm starting with 29 stitches. I'd prob prefer to have 3 rows of border and 3 side stitches of border too, but as the square is going to be put into a larger blanket (unless rejected by our Blanket Mistresses Pistey and Knotty) I thought a slightly scrappy border would probably be okay.

Team Heart on profile

MinnieBar · 13/03/2012 22:22

Wow Trib that's seriously impressive! I'm on my phone and also on my way to bed but yes at first glance it makes sense. And I've just finished my teddy bear square so I'm ready for the next challenge!

Loving your 'I will not be beaten' attitude. That's how I approached it - 'it's only a knitting pattern; I'm an intelligent person; how hard can it be?'

And then I had to admit defeat and give up. Grin

Well done Team Heart tonight! Minnie, I was thinking the tree could have a few roots as there are a couple of rows going spare at the bottom. Let me know!

MinnieBar · 14/03/2012 09:18

That sounds awesome but I don't want to put you to any more trouble!
I'm babysitting for a friend tonight so I'll be (hopefully) able to get lots done Smile

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 09:35

The Mighty trib will beat that tree into submission. Go Trib Grin

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 11:00

Right, in order to keep up with you all, I think I have just mastered cabling - about to tackle the owl

tribpot · 14/03/2012 11:16

Nice one Gleaming! You go girl!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/03/2012 14:09

I love the heart! AND that owl is gorgeoise...You are all so bloomin clever Grin

tribpot · 14/03/2012 14:25

Minnie - I've added a few roots on and will finish the cables tonight, although bear in mind I'll need to test knit the instructions to see if they are actually right :)

OP posts:
GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 14:39

I can cable! Owl is on my profile for showing off purposes!

trib do you want me to knit the tree to consolidate my cabling skills? Could probably do it tomorrow

MinnieBar · 14/03/2012 14:42

That looks fabulous Trib! As does the owl.

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 14:48

Thanks Minnie definately warm and fuzzy feeling, and not just because I am gradually disappearing under a pile of woolly squares from all these lovely designs Grin

tribpot · 14/03/2012 17:00

Your owl TOTALLY ROCKS Gleaming! Go you!

OP posts:
GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 17:03

Thanks trib, I was quite pleased with it

MinnieBar · 14/03/2012 18:23

OK quick query from the bear-of-small-brain over here.

Um, what do the black squares mean?? Blush

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 18:32

Minnie are the black squares the ones the CIA got *tib hasn't finished yet?

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 18:32

or possibly trib

tribpot · 14/03/2012 18:49

Yes, the black squares are the ones for the cables I haven't done yet but bear with me, I will be doing them now.

Gleaming, if you wouldn't mind test knitting it that'd be grand. I'm gonna have a go but only have time to try the branches really.

MinnieBar · 14/03/2012 18:56

Oh phew, I thought it was yet another stitch I didn't know!

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 19:00

Hi trib - I'll have a go as soon as you give the go-ahead for the finished pattern, though I can start first thing tomorrow if you're fairly sure that the current pattern won't change up to the CIA squares. It is looking good!

tribpot · 14/03/2012 19:02

Btw, there are just a couple of stitches where I genuinely don't think the pattern explains what to do. I will highlight those in yellow unless I figure it out tonight. Maybe we can go freestyle and see who comes up with the best pattern Grin

OP posts:
GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 19:14

That's fine trib if you highlight them, I'll do whatever seems best (and write down what I did) and then we can all compare notes

Min you are a really capable knitter, you got to cable before me, we all need a hand with new things - go back to the warm and fuzzy feeling and we'll all ask each other when we get stuck Smile

GleamingHeels · 14/03/2012 19:19

Min, Trib, how many colours are you using to knit the tree?

tribpot · 14/03/2012 19:23

It's the two sets of two stitches which are still shown in black, Gleaming. The instructions just say C1F and show the two stitches effectively crossing each other. I wonder if you're not meant to knit them, just carry one in front, slip the other one on to the right hand needle, then slip the cabled stitch on after it??

Bedtime story time! Back soon.

OP posts:
tribpot · 14/03/2012 19:26

Oh and it's shown in a single colour, my colours are just to differentiate between right and wrong side.
