Talk to me about granny afghans

I'm crocheting lots of squares with quite bright colours, mostly shades of blue, purple, pink, green. They are fairly small at the moment, 4 rounds. I don't know what to do about joining them together. I'm not sure I want to just join them as they are. I was thinking of outlining them all in the same colour to create a cohesiveness but am worried that whatever that colour is might dominate. I've seen some blankets that put four squares together and edge those. But then would I do all the same colour or use 2 or three colours. I've put pictures of the square on my profile, they are on my sofa, which is where the blanket will go.

Any advice?

You need to make the profile public :)

I would say that small squares would look too busy if you edged them all individually though.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 12:32

Do you want a random look or something more "together"?

For the former, I would put 4 different squares together in a bigger square for the latter I would use the same colours. Personally, I'd go for 4 the same colour.

I've just finished the "flowers in the snow" blanket from Ravelry. 110 three round circles all edged with white.
I think the white edging brings it all together and makes it look like a proper design rather than something you've put together from scraps.
You can also join the squares as you edge them.

Very nice Nanny :) I like the Ripple one too - I'm currently working on one of those.

Thanks for the replies. Is my profile public now?

NannyR those blankets are lovely. I do like the white edging, and did attempt it but it ended up as a lampshade here so I don't want to replicate that. I think I am going to do four squares together, mainly because it is easier! You are right soupy about smaller squares looking busy, DH suggested not edging them at all which makes them look even busier.

Thanks for your help.

Lovely colours DillyTante, and I love your lightshade.

I've just finished a Flowers in Snow blanket. I was going to do a multi-coloured hexagon but changed my mind.

I think your grannies will look great as four square sets.

Very nice :)

NannyR - I love your blanket!!

Dilly - no answers sorry, but looking forward to the photo!

Navy blue.

DillyTante · 02/03/2012 09:29

Thanks for the replies. DutchOma navy would go well but I just feel it would be too dark for me.

I've just finished a granny square blanket using bits and pieces of wool I had. Mine are 6 rounds and I didn't plan it terribly well.

I laid mine out in piles where the edging colour was the same in each pile. I fiddled about with a layout and settled on a staggered diagonal layout. It turned out great. But what really made the difference is I put a border around it. I did 6 rounds in granny bobble pattern then 2 rounds of DC.

I suppose what I'm saying is that for mine it was the border that pulled it all together.

I'm very pleased with it and loving crochet so much more than knitting.
