I'm considering learning to knit. Is it easy? What will I need and how much will it cost? And will being left handed make it harder for me?

By patchworking, do you mean quilting? I don't know, but I think there are some quilters about - I know bran quilts.

Adding an update!

Needles and wool arrived today. Am still waiting for the knitting for beginners book to arrive but am itching to get started so am using this to get started. HOWEVER, I am having a nightmare casting on as after a few stitches it goes all funny and I end up starting again!
Is it supposed to be this frustrating at first?!

You won't have anything worth keeping until you have done about 50 hours. It is all about the tension of the wool. It is easier to learn as a child, then your mum and gran can tell you how wonderful you are when you hand them a lopsided and chewed up bit of scarf with holes in. I would prime your loved ones to give you lots of praise and encouragement.

But then maybe you will be like Kaffe Fasset and pick it all up in 20 mins on a train and then become an international knitting star.

I don't know about supposed to be frustrating, but I'm sure it usually is. It's such a shame you don't have anyone to help because it's much easier to knit after someone has cast on for you when you first learn. I think you need to grit your teeth and get the casting on over with, and then it should get easier. Good luck

Thanks What's annoying me most I think is the fact I can do about 5 cast ons perfectly fine, then something goes wrong and they mess up. So I guess i'm frustrated that I know I can do it lol

I am stubbon by nature so you can guarentee i'll crack this if it kills me

Maybe have a look at another website and see if you can find another method, it took me ages with the first one i tried, but found a much clearer set of instructions and have been fine since. I've just cast on my 3rd ever project and i still had to check the method in my book

Stylish - I have no problems at all with knitting and being left handed.

I am teaching DS to knit this weekend. He is desparate to learn (is 4.5!)

He also likes sewing (learned it at school yesterday) and singing show tunes in the bath with his mum. Do you think this is all leading somewhere....
