I want to do some squares for a blanket. I could do plain ones but I'd like to do ones with a nice texture of some kind, but I have no idea where to start.

What do I do? Smile

Join ravelry for some ideas.

Moss stitch is nice. Cast on an odd number of stitches ie 25 then k1p1 across the row will look nice

You could do rib, cast on an even number ie 26 then k2 p2 like this

Too many ideas on ravelry Grin

Moss stitch it is! I'll give that a go next.

Good luck,

Ha ha it's coming out as rib!

Oh well, this square can be rib. The next one can be moss stitch.

Next i'd reccommend Basket Weave

Then how about a mitered square?

Then a Bamboo Square is a variance on the Basket Weave

And finally this one is also a varient on the knit and purl theme...

Post back if you need more - I love rootling around on Ravelry for good patterns for people!

Oooh I like the look of that basket weave, I can see how that's done.

Knitting is seriously about counting isn't it. That mitred square looks VERY complicated.

You could do a stockiing stitch square but throw in the odd row of yarn over, followed by knit 2 together. When you purl the next row the yarn overs make a row of holes.

To do a yarn over, just bring the yarn from the back, over the top of the right needle, and take it back to the back between the two needles. Then knit the next two stitches together.

If you just do a y/o on it's own that will add one stitch, so you need to follow it with a k2tog to keep your number of stitches the same.

Thanks Donkey, that sounds seriously baffling but I'll youtube it and get something visual which should be fine when I get to that stage. Is it one of those things which is easy when you know how?

It sounds a faff typed out like that, but a yarn over is one of the easiest things you can do :) definitely Youtube it. It's also the foundation of lace knitting, so if you later wanted to knit something quite open and delicate, you'd likely be doing lots of them. Good luck!
