Which birthday present to buy for a 6-year-old boy?

I do not know the interests of this boy. I am thinking of buying him a gift card for £10.00 but is it going to be a nice present? I do not want the parents of a child to think that we came to the party just with a postcard. May be I should put it into a little box :) but boxes do not cost pennies.

lego
bakugan
beyblade
books

(mother of 3 boys!)

I have given a gift are before and bought a bag of jelly abuse - wrapped up the jelly babies and fixed the gift card in its envelope on top. Just so it doesn't look like a card...

jelly abuse? pmsl

TimothyClaypoleLover · 10/02/2012 11:06

Lego is your best bet. Know 4 different 6 year old boys that are all obsessed with lego.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 10/02/2012 11:13

I think beyblade was already popular amongst the classmates. Books? I might get a wrong book. I am not sure about bakugan as I would not buy it for my child. Jellies, may be, good idea.
Kids do love lego, yes. I think I will have to see what is available for this age.

Oh bugger... My post made utterly no sense at all.

I would like to clarify I do not abuse jelly. Thank you.

Pancakeflipper · 10/02/2012 11:14

Yes Lego or Knex. Lovely presents.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 10/02/2012 11:18

I am browsing argos for knex and lego. May be I will find something what I like :)

I ordered a space hopper from Amazon yesterday for a 6 yr old. It was under £8.00.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 10/02/2012 11:24

I see, it looks quite funny.
One thing you do not want to do is to buy the same thing as someone else.

and geomag looks nice too. I think if I do not find anything online what I really like then I just give a card with jellies or chocolates :)

22 pieces geomag colour set www.amazon.co.uk/Geomag-Colour-Set-22-Pieces/dp/B002N2NANW/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1328874035&sr=8-7

I cannot believe someone would be excited by that except probably a baby.

I am going for lego!
Thanks everyone for suggestions. I just needed a little bit of help. Girls are easier, yeah?

kids love geomag! the packaging may look boring, but it's a great toy.

lego is a good choice though IMO. my lot spend hours playing with it

My ds2 was 6 a couple of weeks ago.
His favourite present from his party was a moshi monster tin with 8 gold moshi's.
He also got Lego - bioncles or hero factory are his current obsession, Lego game, Bakugan, t-shirt & gloves and an Explorer set in a little pouch that attaches to a belt and has a compass, torch and other bits which he really liked.

ChasingSquirrels · 10/02/2012 12:37

My two have never really got into Geomag, we have a big thing of it that never gets used. I like it though!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions!
The present has not arrived yet.

My 5yo ds and his 7 yo big sister were both thrilled with this. It normally costs about £20 so is a complete bargain.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 15/02/2012 19:29

That is a nice toy. I will keep it in mind. I need to buy something for my DS's to keep them busy and off the computer.
