We haven't had one of these for a while so I thought I start us off.
I've just seriously got into sewing, this is my list

Currently making:
Padded love heart
Cushions...8 of the blinking things!

Planning to make this year:
Earphone tidy x 2
Nautical style cushion
Appliqué cushion

PJ bottoms for a friend- tad nervous about this one!
A rabbit for DS
Spec case for MIL
A highland cow for DS2- very specific!

Thank goodness it's only Jan!

Oh lovely! I was thinking about starting one of these threads and didn't get round to it..... much like most of the projects I am going to list I fear! Blush

Currently working on

  • Granny strip blanket - one of those pick up put down things so no end date, just keep going until the yarn runs out.
  • Cardi for me. Done the back, 1/4 of one front. Just got to finish it before it gets warm! It is on 6.5mm needles so it grows quite quickly..... if I actually get round to picking up the needles.
  • Jumper for DS1 that has been on the list so long I fear it might be better for DS2.

Planning this year

  • Phone case for my new phone
  • Finish a hexagon cushion I have had for a while
  • Use at least one of my stash of jelly rolls to make a quilt.
  • Do a scarf in some lace weight yarn I have. And find the patience to stick at it when it isn't growing quickly enough.
  • Make a whole pair of socks now I get how to turn a heel.
  • Bought some nice fabric last week at a quilts show to make a bag. No pattern in mind though. Just some sort of tote.

On top of this is my course work - I am going a City and Guilds in Patchwork and Quilting so I have do samples for this every week, plus an assignment for May to make an item for the house with the theme of holidays (with all the design work and costings required as well as the finished project). They have taught us to make handmade books so I would like to do some of those to display my work in. There will be more assignments to follow.

There are stashes of yarn and fabric coming out my ears and ideas for them all so the list could be very large but these are the things I want to do most.

Have started:

-green leafy diamonds patchwork quilt (machine)
-English paper pieced stars quilt

But it will be my year of dressmaking because I got a dressmaker's dummy for Xmas.

I have the fabric for
-1940s spotty viscose dress
-Grayson Perry Liberty print blouse (just need to find a pattern)
-a mini-me dress for dd from leftover spotty navy and white cotton from my Clothkits 50s style dress

I also have a 50s dress pattern with long sleeves I want to try but need fabric. And want to make a patchwork mobile phone case and laptop case.

These all sound great! A lot more impressive than I!
I'm suffering from a shocker of a cold and it is somewhat
putting me of my appliqué lettering...turns out you need full concentration and not so much sneezing!

Wow, we are an ambitous lot! I did a few rows of knitting this week which I pleased about because I haven't done much recently. Well I did make a hat a couple of weeks ago but it only took and evening and one ball of chunky yarn so not the biggest deal in the world.

Been working on coursework which has been on colour and involves a lot of splodging around with paint which is nice as it isn't something I have done much for the last 30 years! I have also done a catherdal windown sample which is lovely but time consuming as it is all hand sewing.

Need to crack on with sewing my 'item for the home' which I am still undecided about. Might be a table runner.

pollyblue can you elabourate on your stain glass windows? I immediately thought of stain glass window patchwork but that is only because patchwork is my thing at the moment, but I assume you mean real glass? That sounds like fun but difficult.

pollyblue · 26/01/2012 11:19

BigBoobied yes it's real glass, not patchwork (I can't sew for toffee, and I envy people who've got the knack). I've been studying it at college for about 2 years now and am just starting to branch out into installations, rather than practice panels.

It's fantastic, I love it, it can be physically quite hard work (unless you stick to small-scale decorative pieces), you can get pretty dirty and you need to be able to stand the sight of blood - cut fingers and hands not unusual, especially when you first start. But it's fab, there's no limit to what you can do with glass.

BigBoobiedBertha · 26/01/2012 12:56

I love stained glass. I am very envious of your ability to do that, pollyblue. Maybe one day I will give it a go although not for a while - one course is enough and DH would blow a gasket if I signed up for anything else! I should imagine that is more expensive than patchwork, with the cost of the glass? You can probably make more of a living out of it though, I am guessing?

letsblowthistacostand · 26/01/2012 13:07

Stained glass sounds awesome. How big are your installations?

Well the dresses did not go quite as planned! I finished the first for DD2 and she refused to wear it. And she likes dresses!! And it is her favourite color!! She doesn't like the way it feels wear the fabric is attached to the tshirt. She likes the matching head scarf though. Back to the drawing board I guess.

pollyblue · 26/01/2012 13:10

Yes it can be expensive - but again, it depends on what you want to make. Small copper-foiled decorative pieces can be made quite cheaply, with very little equipment required.

Many tutors do one day courses, quite cheaply, if you wanted to try and see how you get on.

And yes it is possible to make an ok living in glass, although I would say there's more scope to earn in architectural glass (which is fortunately my interest) than small-scale decorative work. Many glass artists also teach as a way of earning.

pollyblue · 26/01/2012 13:25

lets blow - I'm starting small, this window's about 2 foot across and 4 foot high, divided into four panes.
