How do I oil my sewing machine?

I have sewing machine oil but it doesn't tell me how in the manual. Does it mean taking it apart or do I just kind of squirt it in at the holes?

thanks!

Generally I don't think you need to for modern ones. I just get mine serviced every couple of years and he does all that needs doing, marvellous chap.

You need to get a manual for your machine if you don't have one - they almost always tell you what to do. I have a Bernina right now which apparently has light weight something or other and so doesn't need oiling (although cleaning the bobbin race is encouraged)

When I was younger I had an Elna which you popped the plate under the foot off, cleaned out the fluff, and put a drop in each of the red-ringed little holes located all over it..

I also had some Viking or something, which I didn't look after as well as I should, and after a particularly heavy session actually got hot enough to burn off the fluff and oil in a cloud of smoke... so make sure you don't over-oil either

Oh loads of manuals can be found online these days - have a google.

Drop of oil in every hole - I think mine has about 4, they are marked with a ring. Then use some odd coloured thread and scrap fabric and give it a really good run to get rid of any leaks. Only a drop.
Don't do it then not bother to run it for long enough before working on silk ... Only a daft person would do that Blush

Oh yes, clean the fluff out of the feed dogs and bobbin holder regularly, amazing the difference that makes.
