Back to basics with six simple embroidery stitches + 1st Valentine's Giift

At the beginning of the year I promised to intersperse my tutorials with some back to basics instructions, this week we tackle six simple stitches to make a felt heart which can be used as a pin cushion, ornament or filled with lavender to scent drawers... and it is also a sweet gift for Valentine's Day!

There is something very soothing about hand sewing and this will take just over an hour from start to finish :)

yes,I agree. I love making stuff like that.
i recently bought 100 skeins of anchor embroidery thread on ebay for £10.99.
Deeply satisfying!

..but... the proportions on that heart you linked to are all wrong Grin

LatteLady · 08/01/2012 19:01

I am sorry what do you mean?

I can assure you those are exactly what I used. The two semicircles are drawn using glasses with 3" diameters making the widest piece at the top 6" and the tip of the heart is 3.5" from the point at which they bisect... so please enlighten me.

look at the small blue heart in the " I heart embroidery " heading.
It's much better proportioned, with slightly curving sides.

the pattern heart is too wide at the top ( the top two bulges) for the distance from top to bottom. It looks too wide and squat.

this one is better proportioned

Thank you for your critique - perhaps you missed the following from the instructions, "I used a glass with a 3" diameter, I then marked 3.5" below the centre line and drew a line from the semi circles to create the heart design, you can make it longer or shorter to vary the look of your heart."

As this was an aesthetic issue rather than a technical one, I will rest easy.

Yes I saw that, but lengthening it doesn't change the fact that her pattern is still

a )two semicircles
B) with STRAIGHT lines forming the sides. ( sides should be gentle curves without that odd angle she has between the semicircles and the lines. )

Both of these make for a not optimally aesthetic heart shape. I guess it's a matter of taste though

All that aside , I'm swooning at the thought of blanket stitch Smile
