need a specific knitting pattern idea - help!

Many years ago I knitted a beautiful christening gown for my ds using a pattern from the library book, but no longer have either. Now I would like a similar pattern idea to knit myself a shrug, I am happy to work out the measurements myself, but I need help with the actual pattern design.

Basically, my requirements are: vertical lacy design, ie say 3 or maybe 5 vertical "stripes" on the back, with deeply scalloped bottom edge, what I remember there was also like a ridge in the verticals where the scallops were longest (this could be knit2 rather than a plat) and troughs where there were shortest. It must have been some decreasing/increasing going on, but not sure how to make it with any lacy look. I am also stuck on the scalloped egde, can't think what pattern gave me that, tried ravelry and knit central but haven't found anything remotely similar.

I am hoping maybe some of you know what I am on about?..

Have you tried Ravelry?

nightcat · 26/12/2011 23:45

yes, but the only one I found is wave/feather and that has a v strong horizontal ridge, but not so much vertical, it was quite 3d vertically speaking the way I remember it, so still looking..

are any of these patterns close?

nightcat · 27/12/2011 00:13

this feather stitch is slightly close in appearance and scallop edge, but not lacy at all and very narrow and not much of a 3d look..

anything here similar?

nightcat · 27/12/2011 00:43

thanks bunny :) one of them looks slightly similar in 3d stakes, tho mine was less elaborate.. must go to bed now, will resume tomorrow, thank you for your help
where would be the best place for looking for stitches rather than patterns? been through ravelry a-z with not much luck

I have put a picture on my profile of the Christening gown that I have done a long time ago. If this is anything like you are looking for I can send you the pattern.

DutchOma · 27/12/2011 10:07

It's there but not very clear.

nightcat · 27/12/2011 16:20

Dutch Oma, what a beautiful gown :)
you know, your pattern does seem to go vertically and 3d too, tho the edge not scalloped, would it scallop if you held it up, maybe it would? Mine was in mercerised cotton, like thread.
Don't worry about another photo, just please tell me how you made it, what stich you used? I wish I had kept my notes/copies, but a few months Shockago when we were moving I threw them away thinking I won't ever be wanting that again, I was wrong.. it always happens to me when I do a clearout, I need something within weeks :(

this is the closest apart from Dutch Oma's version that I could find, it's like the 3d looking section of the girasole shawl in cream, a bit like christmas tree shape.. (not the complete shawl, that's way beyond me)
If anyone knows how to do that stitch, please point me in the right direction.
girasole

I will also be trying Dutch Oma's pattern :)

The Girasole shawl is available on Ravelry for $6.50. May not be as hard as it looks, no idea.

Have you thought of looking at a general book of knitting pattern stitches. From memory - so not at all reliable - I think there were a couple by Keith Allan/Allen.

Bit naughty, but you could always order on Amazon and then send it back after having a look.

I definitely have a pattern for a christening gown with a scalloped edge. Its an early 1970s one, with scallops that grow into vertical 'stripes'. its a really pretty pattern and I have often considered converting the scallopy design into a shawl so I know it would work for a shrug.
How can I get you a scanned pic I don't want to put my email on here and I don't think that I am able to receive pms as I don't pay the £5 anymore.
Or if you are on ravelry would you be able to put something here so I can find you over there?

The kids have their friends over just now and its manic but I can dig out my box of grandmas old patterns later on.

woollyideas · 12/01/2012 17:50

Is it anything like this?

I've knitted this pattern and it does give a very distinct scalloped edge. Let me know if it is and I'll tell you how to do it. It's a simple four row pattern repeat with nothing more complicated than K2tog, ssk, etc...

I think nightcat is out hunting by day. I have a pattern for her and have pmd her, but she has not been back. Happy mousing

nightcat · 13/01/2012 22:46

hello again, I am back from hunting work sometimes life gets in the way of MN :)

Thank you for the messages, would love to try Flliberty's and Woolly's patterns, the Vine stitch could be it I hope, tho I had seen a different Vine stitch in a library book, but the one linked here looks very close to the one I remember.

In the meantime I tried one called old shell, the scallops were OK, but the pattern looked split vertically where the ridge should have been so unpicked it :(

Woolly, I couldn't see the instructions in your link, could be me not being too savvy Blush, would you mind pointing me in the right direction? Or maybe you tried it and know how to?

Flibberty, pm's are definitely free now, but I woul dbe happy to try it from description if not too complicated to save you the hassle of scanning etc.

Very grateful for your help :)

Don't forget, nightcat, when you look at photos of lace stitches a lot depends on the size of needles/thickness of yarn used. So a lace pattern would look more 'open' if it's knitted with 3 ply yarn on a 4mm needle than a DK wool knitted on 4mm needles.

VINE LACE PATTERN:
Multiple of 9sts plus 4

Rows 1 and 3 (wrong side): Purl
Row 2: K3, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo, k1 rep - ending k1
Row 4: K2, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo, k1 rep - ending k2
Repeat Rows 1-4

Abbreviations:
Yo = Yarn over. Take the yarn over the top of the needle once before making
the next stitch.
Ssk = slip, slip, knit. Slip the first and second stitches knitwise, one at
a time, then insert the left needle into the front of these two stitches
from the left and knit them together.

nightcat · 14/01/2012 16:51

Many thanks Woolly, will be trying this and let you know how it goes :)
